3,101,Peter E,"This is a great hotel in a fantastic location right by union square. The staff on the desk and the transfer driver were friendly and helpful Rooms were clean and well decorated. What did disappoint me was that the hotel as shown on hotels.com are of the hotel how it used to be - with a highly rated restaurant and bar attached. If we had known that there would be no room service or bar in the hotel we would have probably gone elsewhere. It's more like a 3 star hotel without them but still at 5 star prices. The breakfast service laid on to try to compensate was poor - with a grumpy attendant handing out the two pastries per person and the self-service orange juice and coffee often all gone. In summary - when / if they have a proper restaurant and at least room service back then I'd recommend it, but until then there are better options.",Nice hotel but hotels.com did not advise of the closed restaurant and bar 5,102,Victoria R,"This hotel is centrally located, just near Union Square and Market St. The BART subway (Powell St) is close by and the Moscone Conference center is about half a mile on foot. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, banks and pharmacies surrounding the hotel, plus parking garages and a couple of car rental companies. Although in a busy area, I didn't hear any outside noise with rooms clean, comfortable and quiet. They were spacious with en-suite bathrooms (something many San Francisco central hotels don't have as standard). The wifi was fast and reliable - free when you signed up for their rewards program. The minibar was well stocked and they had a good list of complimentary products (toothpaste, deodorant, coffee) that the staff brought to my room very promptly. My only wish was to have a coffee marker in the room as standard so I could've made tea/coffee at my convenience. The hotel did serve complimentary tea/coffee and fruit/pastries in the morning and offered a wine hour in the evening which was an added bonus! I didn't use the gym facilities but having a yoga mat and yoga/pilates TV channel in the room was excellent. The staff were all very friendly, polite and professional. I will definitely stay again if I return to SF.","Central location, great overall stay" 5,103,AnnaV_4,"Many thanks to the staff at Hotel Monaco, especially Marisa and Eddie for making our stay so enjoyable. As requested, there were rose petals scattered around the room and it looked even better than I thought it would!! We knew there wouldn't be a restaurant/bar coming in, so that was no big deal, and motivated us to check out more eating establishments. The Waterbar was a great place to celebrate our anniversary, but we found a little gem called Nob Hill Cafe that had the BEST bread and pasta I've had in a long time.",Perfect 30 year Anniversary trip 5,104,MadeByMark,"We blew a lot of credit card points to book the Hotel Monaco for two nights (and parking our car cost us a whopping fifty bucks a day), but after more than a week on the road, the Hotel Monaco was a cool, quiet, opulent respite for two road-weary travelers. It’s smack in the middle of the action around Union Station, with convenient connections to streetcars and other public transportation in easy walking distance. If you stay there anytime soon, be aware their popular restaurant is closed — so there’s no room service, and breakfast is limited to fruit, cereals, and “Bagels a la Sysco.”","Central, Quiet, Elegant" 3,105,Imogen K,"Nice little hotel in the busy and 'cool' area of town - well placed for getting around and seeing things. Furnished nicely and quite a quirky feel. Beware on arrival that the main valet man inside is a real grump! Looked insulted to even be serving us! The reception staff were lovely though and very helpful. We got a nice room - spacious, comfy and clean. The biggest disappointment was that they had no restaurant and therefore no breakfast or room service at all (and we were only informed this by a generic email a few days before we arrived). They put up a 'makeshift buffet breakfast' which is a joke and consists of a few stale pastries which you are strictly only allowed one of per person (and there is a woman manning this like a hawk!)...should really be giving you a discount for this. The hotel was very busy and wasn't in a great area - if you walked ANY further south than the hotel (literally 1 street) you're in a very dodgy area - lots of hobos and drugs. If we returned we would definitely stay slightly further north - there's a lovely Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton slightly further north - much safer area.","Comfortable hotel, great staff - but restaurant closed" 4,106,AtlantanHaggis,"Very nice hotel with friendly helpful staff. The free wine social hour was fun and the room we had was quiet nicely furnished and a good size. My only gripe was the restaurant & Bar area being under renovation meant no proper breakfast or nightcaps without having to go outside. Yes, there are a LOT of homeless in San Francisco and there are quite a few in the area around the hotel but they are around ALL the hotels in the area and generally left us alone",Nice but not perfect 5,107,Danielle C,"Kuddos to Austin, Ethan and Jonathan for making our family's first visit to San Fransisco outstanding. From dining recommendations - Fish and Farm and Jaspers - to navigating the city, they were super helpful. The Monaco staff even helped us resolve a rental car challenge. Overall, the hotel was beautiful, rooms were just as pictured and clean, too. Wifi worked well, breakfast with the tickets was a bit cheesy though. Great location as it's just a few blocks from Union Station.",Excellent Guest Services 3,108,WCDeb,The lobby and rooms in this Hotel Monaco are quite nice. Just two things to note. 1) the hotel restaurant is currently undergoing renovations. They offer fruit and pastries but you have to use tickets. Seems Kind of tacky for a relatively nice hotel. 2) the location isn't the best. There were numerous vagrants in the area. Be prepared to use a taxi or car service to get to the better parts of the city.,Satisfactory 3,109,VJW322,"We stayed at the Hotel Monaco for three nights in August. Good points 1. The service is first rate. Friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble - from printing out car rental vouchers to directions. 2. We were given free continental breakfast each day. This wasn't included in our rate. 3. As it was our anniversary, the hotel put a bottle of wine in our room along with a congratulations card. What a nice touch. 4. There was a free wine reception most evenings around 5pm-6pm in the lobby. 5. The rooms were serviced early and daily. 6. The downstairs lobby and public areas of the hotel are beautiful with lovely fireplaces and comfy chairs. 7. Cold orange scented drinking water in the lobby - so refreshing. 8. Free wifi. Bad points 1. The hotel is not in a good area and we did not feel safe wandering around at night. It is close to (if not in) the Tenderloin district (Google it if you haven't heard of it) which is the area of San Francisco with the highest crime rate. There are beggars and drunkards everywhere, sometimes stumbling into the road. We saw one man in quite a state get hit by a cab. I cannot overstate this point - the area felt unsafe. 2. Our room felt like it needed a good clean. There were old robes in the wardrobe which looked like they'd been there years. The cushions looked old, as did the carpets. 3. The rooms are tiny. 4. Instead of a duvet cover, they use sheets to cover the duvet. As you move in the night, the sheets detach from the duvet and your skin touches the bear duvet. Not hygienic - get duvet covers!! 5. A few lamps in the room didn't work (in fairness we didn't report this). Also, everything someone in a nearby room turned on water there was a loud banging sound (this happened in the night too). But again, we didn't report this. Tips 1. The hotel is close to Fino Italian restaurant which is divine. It is also close to the Marrakech Magic Theatre (SF's second best rated attraction). This is a must-see show. 2. Hotel parking costs double what it costs to park across the road. You can get valet parking across the road for twenty-five dollars a night but the hotel charges fifty. 3. Book Alcatraz tickets at least a month ahead if your trip as they sell out weeks in advance. Summary The staff are so lovely and do their best to make sure you enjoy yourself. Sadly though, they're dealing with a hotel which needs renovation in a poor area of town.","Excellent service, dodgy area" 5,110,HipRoadtripper9999,"We just returned from our 4 night/5 day visit to San Francisco . It was our first time staying at the Hotel Monaco (we have previously stayed at one of the large chain hotel right on Union Square). We were so very pleased with everything about the Hotel Monaco! First, the location is only 2 blocks off Union Square, so you are right in the middle of everything: shopping, dining, sightseeing, public transit. You are greeted a the curb by a smiling bell hop and the front desk help are so pleasant and nice! We happened to mention when we were checking in that it was our daughter's 21st birthday and my husband and mines 25 wedding anniversary. The next day we returned from our sightseeing tour to find a tray of cookies and a bottle of champagne on ice waiting for us in our suite. The staff had hand written a very nice card to us on our ""double celebration"". This is the kind of personalized guest treatment that is rarely seen anymore in the hotel industry! Our suite consisted of a nice sitting area with desk, queen sleeper couch, stuffed chair and flat screen TV. The bed room was a king bed, stuffed chair, chest with another flat screen TV. Adjacent was the HUGE bathroom with jacuzzi tub and separate walk in shower, marble topped sink vanity . All 3 rooms were divided by pocket doors and another benefit were the deep window seats where you could put your suitcase. Very comfortable, very clean and perfect for a family. When we called the front desk for extra pillows, they were delivered within 15 minutes. NICE! We really were impressed with Hotel Monaco and will recommend it to our friends and family. It is a city hotel, so you will hear sirens and some street noise, but it was actually quieter than the larger hotel that we had stayed at right on the square. The views are of city buildings, but we liked watching the busy sidewalks and shop fronts . Thank you to the staff at Hotel Monaco for a lovely stay and a nice memory of San Fran!! We will be back!","GREAT location, good value, fabulous service" 5,111,Dave S,We stayed at the Monaco in early August and what made our vacation even better was the excellent service we received from the front counter staff. Every recommendation that they made was spot on. Lauren Gruber was especially helpful and needs to be recognized for providing outstanding guest service.,Excellent Guest Service 5,112,rriawgirl,"I stayed here in August on a trip to California and loved it. The hotel was clean and well decorated. The lobby was cool. It was in the heart of everything. We stayed here as a family and had two rooms. Both were exceptional. The bathrooms and rooms were big and so beautifully decorated. I saw a couple in the lobby who just had two bikes delivered to them for biking around the city. they were cute Kimpton touring bikes and a staff member was assisting adjusting their seats and getting them outfitted to ride the bikes. I thought it was a great amenity. Of course as in every Kimpton, the coffee hour and wine hours with free beverages are awesome.","Great Hotel, loved the boutique feel" 5,113,chuckthe1st,"nice, good sized hotel in the heart of things with good staff. They were very accommodating and friendly. The food was as you expect from hotel. There was a nice lobby and the coffee in the morning is a nice touch that you use more than ud think. A note for san francisco no the hotel is that it has a lot more homeless people on the streets than other cities.",Great Hotel 5,114,SimonFLA,"We had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Monaco the last week of July. It was our first visit to San Francisco and we were there to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. This was our second stay at a Kimpton Hotel this summer (The Angler's Miami Beach is the other) and once again we could not have been happier with our choice. The hotel itself is a beautiful older building that is being very well maintained and has some really stunning details, especially the living room, main staircase and central lobby ceiling. The hotel is in a great location just two blocks from Union Square and within walking distance of Chinatown. What really sets the Monaco, and apparently Kimpton Hotels in general, apart is the staff. Everyone, without exception, and regardless of position, was so incredibly welcoming, friendly and professional that virtually every other hotel we've stayed at pales in comparison. Once we'd checked-in we were escorted to our room by Jackson Best who gave us a great overview of the hotel and the general area around Union Square. In the room we were surprised, and so pleased, to see a very thoughtful gift that Johnathan had placed there for our anniversary!! Throughout our stay Jackson became an invaluable source of information and we came to depend on he and Ethan's ability to pick amazing restaurants. One evening we were at a loss as to where we'd eat. Mentioned this to Jackson on our way to the afternoon wine tasting and on our return to our room found seven full menus in a folder with a handwritten note of explanation!!! Sadly Jackson doesn't work every day but we soon came to count on Ethan, James and Mose for the same level of incredibly thoughtful and attentive service. On our last evening in town James went especially out of his way to make it a special night. I know I'm leaving many names out, and for that I apologize, but we can't thank all of you enough for helping to make our 30th such a wonderful experience. When we return to San Francisco we'll definitely choose The Monaco and at this point I can't imagine staying anywhere but at Kimpton Hotels from now on.",Near Perfect Hotel 5,115,Maverick2004,"Perfect size, lovely staff, beautiful (and fun) lobby and seating areas, free wine hour every night with a different winery's wines each month, nice coffee service in the am, clean and cheerfully decorated rooms - not large but large enough. Beautiful restaurant but with odd menu...BUT that's about to change. Wonderfully situated a couple of blocks from Union Square with a grocery store and Walgreens directly across the street. No real views other than the street view but I would stay again.",Almost Perfect 5,116,xish,"I have stayed at various hotels in SF for either personal or work visits. Club Monaco is by far the best one -- service, location, decor, value. There is nothing I would change about the hotel. It has an old world European feel when you walk in the lobby, but everything else is modern. Great design in the rooms, good space. Location wise - on Geary and Taylor, 5 min from Union Square, and 15 min from Chinatown, 10 min from Soma. We rented car from hotel to wine country. Hotel has discount with enterprise, pick up and drop off at the hotel. Extremely convenient and cheaper than zip car. When I come back to SF, I will stay at Hotel Monaco again.",Great Hotel - Returning Customer 5,117,Sharon J,"Stayed here for 3 nights halfway through our holiday driving around California. Had a package inclusive of valet parking, so abandoned the car for our stay. Very friendly guy outside the door dealt with the car and luggage. While checking in we mentioned we'd had a pet goldfish called Fred while at another Kimpton hotel, the Marlowe in Boston, on a previous holiday. After putting our luggage in the room we set off up Taylor street and over Nob Hill to Fisherman's Wharf (a great walk & very steep in parts) & on our return found Fred junior in a bowl in our room, much to our son's delight. Very comfy room with all the things you'd expect (including the great animal print dressing gowns that Kimptons have): fridge, safe, ironing things, toiletries, snacks, coffee making etc. it's close to Union Square with all the shopping you might desire and where tour buses go from. The staff are all very courteous and helpful (great restaurant suggestion of Sear's Fine Dining) and Daniel on the desk went out of his way to look into why some of our accrued Kimpton points were missing from stays at other Kimpton Hotels. It's also a great spot on Geary Street for driving on route 1 along the coast as that begins at the end of the road!","Great hotel, great location" 5,118,arlo6,"My husband and I recently stayed at the Hotel Monaco during our first trip to San Francisco. It was absolutely wonderful. I only wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is great. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. We booked a regular king room but received a complimentary upgrade to one of the junior suites. It was a gorgeous huge room. This was a total surprise to us and a really nice treat. Since we missed the wine tasting earlier in the evening we were also given tickets to receive two complimentary glasses of wine in the hotel bar. This was a very nice gesture and much appreciated. We also received some other coupons for various discounts that we would have used if we were staying longer. Lauren at the front desk provided us with the names of several restaurants within walking distance and then made us a last minute dinner reservation. We really enjoyed our stay and I would definitely return. I also plan to check out other other Kimpton properties next time I travel. I do wonder why they are renovating the Grand Cafe though. From what I was told the renovations will be quite significant. The restaurant is lovely and full of many historical architectural details. It is unfortunate that this historically significant property will be totally redone. Hopefully many of the old details will be incorporated into the new design.",Wonderful Hotel! 5,119,Stefanie S,"I did a lot of research looking for a hotel suite for our family vacation in San Francisco. The Hotel Monaco was a perfect choice. What friendly and delightful staff. Room size was good for family of 4. I will miss the Grand Cafe, where we had great food and drinks, but I will make sure to come back to see their new offerings.",San Francisco family trip 5,120,Leslie S,"I arrived here from a longer then usual flight from Boston bleary eyed, tired and hungry. I was greeted at my cab by the nicest guy named Eddie. Just as sweet and gracious as can be. Then on to walking in and meeting James, who is the floor manager. What a gem. Lauren behind the front desk (I'll get to that in a sec), Daniel who was with her, Benji, who helped me with my bags, and Wilfredo who served me lunch. So, here I am, bone tired, and Lauren, the lovely front desk person, said ""your room is ready, but if you don't mind waiting and allow us to spoil you, it will just be a little longer"" What? YES! WOW. Who does that? Well, they do!! So, I dragged myself into the their bar/dining room, The Grand Cafe Brassierie and Bar, and Wilfredo whisked over some delicious sour dough bread, set me up immediately with a menu and recommended and delivered the most delicious Tuna Nicoise salad. OMG fresh. Then, I moved back out to the lobby, where Benji brought me a pillow to put behind my head and back so I would be comfortable while I waited for the room that they upgraded me at for no reason, just cause and for no extra cost. Benji then comes over to hand me a gift card for two free cocktails at the bar during my stay. Then Daniel not only announces in way less time then it should have taken, in the sweetest voice with the nicest smile, ""your room is ready. may we take you there now"". Now comes James again, who whisked my bags up and gave me a list of every wonderful amenity that this awesome hotel offers. (Daniel, did you think I wouldn't sparkle when you reminded me of complimentary wine hour from 5-6). I have stayed in a lot of hotels, for business and pleasure and this is hands down the most unreal, unbelievable, incredible, phenomenal service I have ever, EVER received. Oh, and the room I'm in is just freaking gorgeous! My new go to place as I'll be visiting San Francisco more often!! You guys ROCK!!! Pinch me. I'm dreaming. Swoon!",THIS is how you do it! 4,121,PennyMy,"The Monaco was a great place to stay. Staff is friendly and helpful-as mentioned in other reviews-great fast elevators. We loved having the goldfish in the room. The fridge was crammed with expensive mini-bar items and we did have to move everything around carefully to put in some drinks we bought at the Walgreens across the street. The restaurant looked good, but too expensive for us. I thought they had a breakfast, but it was only coffee-good coffee, though. Nice evening reception for wine drinkers. Lots of good restaurants and shops to walk to.","Nice room, great location" 5,122,summerinplaya,"Just returned from a family trip to San Francisco. This hotel could not have been more perfect. The lobby and main areas are lovely. The room was beautiful, large, and perfect for our family of four. We arrived several hours before check-in with the expectation of asking the front desk to hold our bags, but our room was already ready for us. I booked this room directly through the Kimpton website and paid less for this gorgeous suite than what was advertised anywhere for a double room, using Kimpton's ""Stretch the Weekend"" rate. Our suite was gorgeous and we had a great city view out of the two large windows with window seats. I can't say enough about how much we loved the style/decor of this hotel and the room. The location of this hotel is absolutely perfect. It is two blocks away from the center of everything, but not up the hill toward many of the union square hotels in which uphill walking would be necessary every time you came back from an outing. Those two blocks that you will walk toward the hotel from union square felt absolutely safe, even late at night with our family, because there were plenty of people out and about at all times. There are a few very interesting small art galleries along those two blocks, which were fun to check out along the way. Lots of shopping and restaurants are nearby. Cable cars, buses, and BART are accessible within a 5-10 minute walk. Everyone we encountered at the hotel were friendly and professional. The wine hour was fun and we actually were surprised to time ourselves accordingly to participate a couple of times. We had a fantastic time in this beautiful and unique city and already have decided we will need to plan a future trip.",Beautiful and convenient 5,123,TravelerZLosAngeles,"Close to Union Square and Market, this is nice hotel with the typical Kimpton amenities that make a business trip that much more comfortable. Staff was super friendly and my room was perfect--eclectic and cute, but not too over the top. Common areas were nice, and I even managed to make it to the complimentary wine hour with one of my coworkers, which was great. Not so great was the hotel restaurant--we had a rather sub-par lunch there. But there are tons of restaurants around, so don't let that be a deterrent to your stay--just utilize the concierge.",Good Choice for SF Hotel 5,124,IntercontinentalOz,"This is a nice place. A big bed in a designer decorated two-room suite makes for a good stay in a city. The friendly and helpful staff and great location close to Union Square Park, theatres and shopping, and great access to public transport, including street cars, cable cars and BART makes things even easier.",I'd happily return 4,125,hpd3,"I enjoyed my stay at The Hotel Monaco on a recent business trip. The staff first accommodated my online request of a high floor, quiet room and acknowledged this when I checked in (thats a first in all of my travels). The room was nice, there is a fridge (only with there was a microwave to heat coffee) and the internet service was excellent. Starbucks is not even a block away and there is a Walgreens across the street (open from 9-12 I think). The hotel is only 2 blocks from Union Square which makes it super convenient to everything in the heart of the city. The staff was very nice and helpful (they recommended the best pizza I have had in San Francisco) and had a town car service for a ride back to the airport. I would highly recommend taking BART and getting off at the Powell Street stop where its only a 5-10 minute walk and much cheaper than a cab. I would give the hotel 4.5 stars if you could give this rating and would stay here when I come back to SF.","Nice Stay, Excellent service and fastest elevators known to mankind" 4,126,MGLK,We decided to stay at hotel Monaco for our 1 year wedding anniversary. We arrived around noon and they had a room ready for us! When we got to our room we were surprised at the size of the room. It was a little on the smaller size but we knew we wouldn't be in the room much anyway so we were fine with it. The staff was very helpful with giving us suggestions on how to get around the city and we enjoyed the amenities such at the hot tub in the spa area and the wine hour. We did have a car and paid the $52 fee plus taxes for 3 nights- we did know that because the concierge told us as we were arriving but now in hindsight I think i should have asked if he had other recommendations since there are a bunch of parking garages nearby but I didnt. Overall the hotel was great. We will definitely stay here again if ever in San Fran. 1 tip- when leaving the hotel make a right and walk 2 blocks to union square.,Anniversary in San Fran 5,127,Manton52,"What a great experience from friendly check in, beautiful room, great staff and perfect location! I love Kimpton hotels but this one is my favorite. Daniel and Gabby at the front desk and I met Jason the GM he couldn't have been kinder! Live this place!!",Five out of Five! 5,128,ATL4NTA,"My wife and I stayed here for one night on our trip to Napa/Sonoma. I'm usually a Marriott or Starwood guy when it comes to name brand hotels, but figured I'd give the Hotel Monaco a try based on others' positive reviews. The price was right and the location is exactly where we wanted to be - just steps from Union Square. The hotel has the feel of a small boutique hotel with classy decor and nice finishings. The room was very comfortable. I mentioned that we were there to celebrate my wife's birthday and we were surprisingly greeted with a free suite upgrade, a bottle of champagne, and a hand-written ""happy birthday"" note. Everyone we encountered at the hotel was extremely pleasant and helpful! I've stayed in A LOT of hotels over the years, and it's refreshing to find a spot where the staff consistently appear positive and willing to go the extra step to make your stay a little better. From the bellman out front who gave us step by step directions to his recommended lunch spot, to Lauren at the front desk who printed out a list of recommended wineries and restaurants in downtown Senoma, the service was top notch. Coming from a regular platinum member at the other big chains, I plan to add Kimpton to my list going forward based on this experience alone! Thanks again for the great stay!","Great hotel, excellent service, prime location" 3,129,rossvesq,"I'm a big fan of the Kimpton chain and often stay in their hotels in other cities. So I was surprised at how average this felt. The location is pretty good, only a couple of blocks from Union Square and a fairly short walk to the Financial District and Market Street. But the check in was nothing special, and certainly not what I am used to at other Kimptons. The lobby area is decent with some nice seating areas, and of course the wine/cheese event every afternoon. My room was quiet and clean, but I wasn't thrilled with the furnishings, they were a little tired. The restaurant that is connected to the hotel was closed for renovations, which I wish someone had told me when my staff booked the hotel as we probably would have changed hotels. My wake up call the net morning was almost 15 minutes past due. The bathroom was at least decently sized and the towels were fluffy. But overall I found little here that set it apart from other hotels, and in fact my room felt a lot like a typical corporate hotel (Hyatt, Hilton, Sheraton) which of course is exactly why I usually choose Kimpton hotels in order to avoid that feeling. So, if you have other choices in the City consider them first, I probably won't return.",Disappointingly average 2,130,rockcreekgirl,"Let's start with the good: adequate lighting and outlets, a refrigerator in the room, maintenance responded quickly. As Kimpton members, we received $10 to use at the bar and a Sunday NYT. Now the not-so-good: ours was arguably the ugliest hotel room we've ever seen. One wall was red, one white, one navy, and one was red, white, navy, and gold wide stripes. The carpet had a gray-on-gray pattern. The bedding was comfortable but black and white. Did I mention the standing lamp with a silver swirl lampshade? And, according to the front desk, all the rooms have the same decor. The shower liner wasn't vinyl but fabric, so every time someone showered, about a quart of water ended up on the floor. Ugh. As Kimpton members, we had hoped to get a nice room. Our ""quiet"" room was adjacent to a gravel roof. Not exactly the view we had hoped for. We mentioned the shower problem to the front desk, but the Monaco offered no apology other than a verbal one...not even a glass of wine on the house. If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair....and think twice about staying at the Monaco.",Not edgy--over the cliff
