Rooms were very cute, decent size for SF. staff was super nice and very helpful! I would definately recommend this hotel, the location was great! The only complaint is the cost of parking it was $65 after taxes to valet! If you stay in Union square the parking can get pricey!",Great Stay! 5,2,Wastewar,"My partner and I spent four nights here over New Years and loved it. Super staff; lovely, quiet room; excellent location within easy walking to much of Downtown and an overall experience that was perfect. Topped it off with the hotel driver taking us to SFO in total comfort and luxury at a very reasonable rate. Will be back to the Hotel Monaco when next in SF.",Loved it 2,3,gurnman,"I like Kimpton hotels overall and Hotel Monaco is a great location for my annual meeting in San Francisco. I was a bit disappointed by a few things on my recent visit there. First, I was told my room was ready - I go up and it hadn't been cleaned from previous occupant. to their credit, they left a bottle of wine in my room when moved to a clean one, but given that I was on a very busy schedule that day (arrival day), it had me behind schedule. That was ok overall and they tried to make up for the error. Next problem? Restaurant closed and in process of renovation with jackhammers running daily. Had I known, I would NOT have chosen this hotel for my busy work visit in which I needed quiet time in hotel to do work. they had a notice in the room apologizing for this... but I needed to know that when I booked. Major problem for me. Lastly, on way to airport, the concierge arranges a car to get me to airport. Sold me on the fact that it was raining and with the slowdown, might be cheaper than taxi (quoted price was $15 more than the taxi I had taken in). Moreover, I was told that gratuity was included. With that and the potential for a slower ride (with a higher potential metered price) I took the offer. After picked up the driver was clearly agitated that I was told gratuity was included. No slowdown whatsoever. hence, I had a cab ride that was far more expensive than a normal metered cab and put the driver in an unfair position. I tipped by he refused, knowing that the concierge had misinformed me. that is uncool. Not the worst infractions, but at $300/night, I expected more. And, the errors were unacceptable. Won't visit again.",a few disappointments 4,4,Mookie-Eugene,"This is a lovely, very old (1901...yes, through the quake!!) boutique hotel. The sitting area of the lobby is just beautiful. The seating is comfortable, the fireplace is inviting. The décor is wonderful. There is a dramatic granite winding staircase that goes to the next floor. The bed in our room was sooooo comfortable and the towels sumptuous. The room was totally quiet. Now...the space...our room was no more than 9 or 10 feet wide and maybe 13 feet long. in the bathroom it was important not to turn around too fast because you could hit a wall.","Huge on comfort, small on space" 4,5,laurenjamie816,"My husband and I stayed here for five nights in November 2014. It’s centrally located, short walk to Market Street, Union Square, the Convention Center (we were in San Francisco for a convention), MUNI and BART station on Powell Street, maybe 15 minute walk along Market to the Embarcadero. Good price, not super fancy but pleasant, well maintained, and pretty for the money (lovely lobby level, with two fireplaces). As with other Kimpton Hotels this Hotel Monaco hosts a wine hour in the evenings, which is always nice. The restaurant is under renovation, so it was closed while we were there, so to make up for it they provided a pastry and a piece of fruit in the mornings, which we appreciated. The only negatives about the Monaco was that they charged to use the computers in the business center and to print anything (except boarding passes, which are free), which just seems unnecessarily stingy. And while the street that the hotel is on has theaters, galleries, and high end shops, it is only a couple of blocks from the Tenderloin, which can be a bit rough for some tastes.",Good price and convenient location 4,6,Frannyremo88,"Two blocks from Union Square without the price tag of those found on the square. Modern, stylish hotel with numerous, pretty decent restaurants in the area! Third leg of our honeymoon and was a great place to stay in San Francisco. Well worth a visit. Wine hour - Free each evening.",Great location 5,7,Ashers99,"We spent a couple of nights at this hotel in November 2014. From our first contact the staff were welcoming and helpful, with nothing appearing to be too much trouble, thanks especially to James Creer for his advice and offer for us to contact him if we needed any further info which was very kind. We also attended the wine tasting on the second night, which was a lovely after a busy day. Our room was comfortable, clean and warm. We would plan to stay there again, when we return to San Francisco.",Nice little touches 5,8,LatinAmericanIdol,"This hotel is exceptional. Great service and opulent decor. Convenient location. Rooms are clean, comfortable, quiet, and nicely decorated. Wine hour and complimentary breakfast are a very thoughtful touch. This place brought a huge smile to our faces. We felt spoiled and we loved it!",Stay Here and Indulge 5,9,LRA45,"We have stayed at many Kimpton Hotels - in NYC, DC and Boston - but the Hotel Monaco in San Francisco is our favorite - mainly because of the staff... especially Austin Bennett. He makes us feel like family - and seems truly delighted to see us, each time we return. To walk through the doors of a big city hotel and be made to feel so special is - well, special!",A home away from home 4,10,tbtb73,"We enjoyed our stay here. The ambience is wonderful in the lobby. The decorations are a bit flamboyant in the rooms. I liked them, my wife didn't. The rooms were very clean and nice, but the tub was too small. We paid $174/night which, sadly, is a very good rate for a 4-star hotel in SF. There was no restaurant because it was being remodeled, so, they gave us vouchers for a free pastry and piece of fruit for each person. Well, they originally gave us two less than we should have received, so I had to ask for more. That was a bit tacky, how cheap they were about the breakfast situation. They were very strict about it. On the other hand, they had excellent teas and organic coffee available, which totally made up for it. If you want a coffee maker in your room, you have to ask for it. If you stay there, do not walk south toward market. It's very seedy in that area. Walking east along Geary St toward Market St is fine though. The public transportation system was wonderful and we used it to go all over SF. We didn't wait longer than 10 minutes for any bus, except once, late at night. Now, keep in mind that I'm not referring to the trolleys, which are expensive and more of just a tourist attraction. I am referring to the buses. Tip, check out Buena Vista Park while you're in SF. It doesn't seem to be very well-known, and it's incredible and free. Be ready to walk uphill a good distance and see amazing views. Bring the camera.",Very Clean and Great Ambience 3,11,wildelk,"We had a nice stay at the Monaco in SF. Just an overnight getaway for my birthday from my brother. The front desk staff made kind of a big deal about having to beat out Seattle for wowing me. I had told them what a great experience we had there. Didn't know what to expect. Got a bottle of wine in the room for my birthday, but it didn't compare to the experience we had in Seattle. Front desk staff was a bit impersonal and I didn't get the one-on-one service we got in Seattle. Oh well. It was fine though. Just nothing special. Also restaurant attached to the hotel is now gone.",Nice rooms - not the experience I had in Seattle though 1,12,Alex T,"We've stayed here multiple times with ok experiences. However, this last time we booked online though our American Express agent and showed up to find the hotel was under construction and we were told the restaurant was closed and that we would be giving coupons ( tacky cut up construction paper) for 1 pastry and 1 cup of coffee/OJ in the morning. OK, whatever.... we'll make do for a few days and so we headed up to our room. It wasn't 5 mins before the jack hammering started and so we called down to see how long it was going to go on... We were told that we this was on there website and it would be 8am-5pm every day... OK... fine so we asked if we could use the hot tub and steam room, but they were also under contraction and off limits... So you know there is nothing else to do in this hotel besides eat and relax in the hot tub. We were paying over $390 a night and we would not be abel to relax at all.. So we called down to speak to the front desk and we were told that they would try to find us another hotel but it would cost us the difference. WHAT? I asked for a refund and I would find something on my own this was horrible... they proceeded to tell me that we made our reservations through AMEX and there was nothing they could do... After standing in line with al the other anger guests I called AMEX and told them about what was going on and they took care of everything. We ended up at the Westin across the street and the Hotel Monaco finally gave us a refund after AMEX told them they were canceling our reservations. I was just sad that they never made arrangements for the renovations and basically told us that we were out of luck and to deal with it. We will never stay at a Kimpton hotel again.",Under Construction and Non-Responsive 4,13,sahmed76,"cute little boutique hotel in close proximity to union square. easily walkable but as other reviewers have commented on, the noise is really distracting. you can hear everything outside. the closet is also tiny!",cute little hotel 3,14,Seattlekat1,This hotel is very attractively decorated but the windows are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. The street noise is beyond ridiculous-- I love Kimptons but will not stay here again because a good night's sleep is just not possible. Let me know when you have new windows.,Are these windows really closed? 3,15,Gina H,"This is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic location. The rooms are older, windows have metal running through them but that's part of the deal when you go to a Kimpton. Its almost always a converted building getting a second life. One thing you expect in older buildings is thicker walls. I stayed at a Kimpton in DC that was a former government building and the walls were an inch thick. Not so in this hotel. Of course, my neighbor was on 'something' and ended up vandalizing her room and being arrested but it was very, very loud. Bathroom was very small compared to the room size. The vanity was mirrored so I was able to do a self uterine exam while sitting on the toilet. That was weird. Decent wi fi cable not that exciting but you can't beat the location.","Good location, thin walls" 4,16,Wandere1963,"Like most hotels in the area, it is older and a little dated in many ways. It was a great location and the staff was very helpful. The restaurant was also undergoing renovation so no food or room service - which in SF is not all that bad, but made breakfast a little difficult.",Great location 4,17,Betsygc,"I did a ""name your price"" on Priceline and ended up at the Monaco. I read some of the reviews, and was very worried that it was going to be a bad hotel. I was pleasantly surprised! The employees were very helpful, the hotel was clean and well kept. The lobby is very lovely and they have a fabulous fireplace at the end of the lobby as you walk in. They also have a nice sitting area passed the elevators that had another great fireplace and comfortable cars and couches. The Grand Restaurant is closed for renovations, (reopens in January 2015) but they offered free fruit, pastries, and hot beverages because of it. And best of all they had FREE WIFI! Yeah! I hate if when expensive hotels make you pay extra for the internet. It was just a short walk to Union Square and Market Street. Great location.",Pleasantly Surprised 3,18,Aly P,"I am currently staying at this hotel. It's decorated for Christmas and has Christmas music going so it is festive. They also have fires goi in all the fireplaces which I appreciate. The only reason I'm giving this an average rating is because they are currently doing construction throughout the hotel. We were told between 9 and 5 there would be noise and I can definitely hear it. The restaurant is closed so no room service. They are providing free coffee, baked goods and fruit in am to compensate. We got a very good deal so I'm happy to stay here. I would be disappointed if I paid full price. Wifi is not free which is a bummer, that is 12.95 per day. Valet is 56 a night. I would wait till construction is over and then come or come back as hotel is clean, cute and has a lot of potential.",Nice but not outstanding 5,19,William20142014,"We had an excellent overall experience at this Union Square/Theater District hotel during Thanksgiving week. The hotel is in a Beaux Arts building, with soaring public spaces well decorated with beautifully executed murals. Service by every employee was enthusiastic, friendly, helpful--outstanding in every respect. Our room, though small, was nicely decorated, clean and quiet. As Kimpton Karma members, we were upgraded to a room on the top floor and had free WiFi in our room. We also got a $10 minibar credit. A complementary Continental breakfast, and wine hour from 5-6 p.m., were provided. Room rate was very reasonable (as are rates in most downtown hotels during Thanksgiving week). Top-flight experience in every respect. We'd certainly come back.",Outstanding service 4,20,Stephy789,"We visited Hotel Monaco in San Francisco for 4 nights in June. It was a lovely hotel, staff were friendly, especially the lovely door man who was very helpful with directions. The room was clean but quite small. We didn't spend much time in the room so this wasn't a big problem for us. The room was very quiet at night. The location was very central, very close to Union Square. We had the free continental breakfast every morning (I am not sure if this is usually free but we were given tokens when checking me in). The breakfast was always fine and we enjoyed a light breakfast every morning of a bowl of fruit together with a choice of a bagel, toast or croissant. The free wine hour was also great everyday (I think it was between 5 and 6pm) where free food was also provided - little nibbles like cheese etc. If I returned to San Francisco I don't think we would stay here again, but just because there seemed like there was a lot of good hotels around and we would like to try somewhere different.",Good hotel in great location 3,21,Tim R,"Decent Boutique Hotel with Modern Decor Pros -Hotel has a lot of FREE stuff (Wi-Fi, Breakfast, Happy Hour, Bikes) -Clean -Nice staff -Great working area in the room -Location Cons -Bed was not that great and squeaky, my back was not happy -Towels had a bad gym laundry smell -Tiny gym with little equipment",Decent Boutique Hotel with Modern Decor 4,22,zeldawannabe,"I love Monaco hotels, and this one is definitely on par with all the other ones that I love. It's blocks from everywhere we want to be. The lobbies are posh and comfy. The staff is excellent and friendly. The rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable, but very small, which is understandable because it's a historic building.","Awesome lobby and great location, but very small rooms." 4,23,MyIze2Go,"i'm a sucker for most Kimpton Hotels, especially the Monaco group. This is my second visit here in about two years. I still like it a lot though the hotel restaurant (which was good last time I was there)was closed for renovation. Positives about this hotel; proximate to Union Square/Market Street, quite rooms (though I got one off the Main Street), free wine tasting in the evening and helpful friendly staff.",Nearly there 3,24,Idontwant2gohome,"After reading all the reviews, as well as reading that the hotel was recently renovated, I was thinking we would have a wonderful stay at Hotel Monaco. I even booked a suite, thinking the room was going to be great. Well, the room smelled like old cigarettes and the bathroom was just barely renovated. This bathroom was just down right odd. It seemed like ""renovation"" really just meant newer wallpaper and maybe a new marble top sink. Lots of wasted space. The floor tile was very outdated. The bathtub shower tile was also from a distant era and in need of some serious attention. The tub was one step up from the floor, and if we were elderly, we would not have been able to even get into the shower tub. The glass door frame was just gross. The smell of old cigarettes detracted from the fun decor and comfy bed. The room was large and offered a lot of space, but, again, the smell made it not very desirable to stay in the room. It was good that we could open the windows. The location of the hotel is great. Easy walking distance to great restaurants and shopping. The restaurant was under construction, so we went out for breakfast instead of having the one free pastry the hotel offered. There are so many other hotels to choose from, that we would probably not chose to stay here again.",Was not what I expected 3,25,Jeff B,"OK - I come here several times a year and I love this hotel. I tell everyone about the statue of 3 monkeys in the lobby. BUT this is the first time in 4 years coming that I was in a lovely Jr. Suite facing Geary Street. BIG MISTAKE. Super loud. And there were gun shots out front on the street with police coming at 1:30 AM. No sleep to be found. I loved this chain, but wow is the front of this hotel loud.",First time this was not great 5,26,Ottawa64,"Stayed 4 nights and loved our room, the hotel location, staff and everything in between. Hosted wine hour in the evening is great, they also had a masseur in the lobby to help relax after the long day of walking. Great personal touches.",Perfect home away from home 4,27,costaricagregg,"I love this hotel- seems like a bit of Europe as rooms are smaller but nice. We got a deal so our room did not have a very good view- outside roof and a bit dark. Hotel is ideally situated for Union Square, Curran Theater or Biscuits'n'Blues. The wine hour is a nice touch and I love the lobby. Nice selection for a SF visit.",A bit of Europe 3,28,PadmaSathosh,"Stayed here in July 2014. What I liked: 1. Clean rooms 2. Neatly & clean towels 3.Mobile chargers, toothbrushes, paste..everything si available here. & that too for free. What I didn’t like: 1. Since the hotel was under renovation, we got very few things for breakfast (almost equal to nothing) 2. Not a real value for money. Felt it was a little over-priced for what was being offered.",Mixed feelings 4,29,mbaltman,"In San Francisco for a professional convention. Overall had a very positive experience at the Hotel Monaco. Positives: Clean, modern, fairly stylish room. I found the decor superior to the standard hotel room. Very friendly and generally helpful staff, including the housekeeping staff. I got to the hotel and needed a car at the end of my trip for a single day which they helped me arrange easily, then were very helpful with cancelling when my plans shifted. Good strong WiFi signal in the room. Hotel is in a decent location, not a terribly long walk from a lot of eateries and amenities. Negatives: Not super close to the convention center or the BART system. They gave each person who stayed one (and only one) pastry per day in the morning as ""compensation"" for construction at their restaurant, but it was small and not that good. It was a nice gesture, I guess, but not the best execution. Other: They were under construction when I was there, so I did not get to try the restaurant or the fitness center. I did not have any noise issues with the construction in my room. Overall a very positive experience. I would stay there again.",Enjoyable Stay 4,30,ELZ15,"My 2nd stay - comfortable rooms, nice welcome & really nice to be welcomed back each day - definitely my hotel of choice in San Francisco. Love the evening wine reception; yoga mat in room is a nice touch. Very convenient location 2 blocks from Union Sq and a short walk from Market St. Lots of good restaurants in the area. Monaco's restaurant is under renovation - look forward to that being finished before next visit.",Great stay once again 5,31,1kunited,"Had an amazing stay at the Hotel Monaco. Upgraded to a junior suite which was a great room, great view of Geary Street, wonderful extra large tub with jets. The service was impeccable from check-in to evening wine service to general staff. The external building facade looks dated but the inside of the building is absolutely wonderful with great ceilings and ambience in the main room, fireplaces, and the room was amazingly great as well. Note -- the Grand Cafe restaurant is under construction right now, so during the day the rooms near that side of the hotel have jackhammer noise. But only during the day, and it wasn't all that bothersome.","Great Service, Great property" 4,32,Mosschops27,"The welcome on arrival was very friendly and we were quickly checked in. The room was nicely decorated in a quirky style, clean and the bed was very comfortable. It will be even better when the new restaurant is completed. Union Square is just a short stroll away and we would definitely stay here again.",Great welcome - Good Stay 3,33,melybobs,Sadly when we stayed here the ground floor was being refurbished completion 2015 due to this the restaurant and bar area were closed however our room was beautiful wel presented we were offered complimentary Danish and coffee in the lounge this rather a small area and not ideal we still enjoyed our stay in a good central location,Under refurbishment 4,34,bernard_cristalli,"Rather convenient location of this boutique-hotel, 3 or 4 blocks from Union Square. Geary street downwards is safe. Market st is not far either. Renewed decoration in an old building. Very friendly staff. The rooms are clean, some are rather small. The quieter are on the internal yard. You may hear what's happening in the next rooms. A good place but no real breakfast here, and that's a pity.",Quite decent in downtown SF 4,35,Mixhelelj0968,"This was our first time staying in San Francisco at the Hotel Monaco where we stayed for five nights. It was a lovely hotel when you walked in the front door. The Living area was basic, but the rooms were very nice. The Bed was comfortable and had plenty of space for two of us. What impressed me the most was the staff. Extremely helpful, accommodating, and friendly. The maid service was commendable, Every Morning they would tell us ""Good Morning"" and ask if there was anything we needed. They even knew which room I was in, which was quite surprising. The hotel decor on the floors other than the lobby reminded me of the Strater hotel in Durango which I just love. The downside was they are currently renovating their Bar and restaurant so we had to go out for Breakfast. However the hotel did offer free pastries, muffins, fruit, coffee, and juices every morning, and had a wine hour every evening. There is a fantastic Breakfast place across the street, less than a block away, which we ate at everyday. Yes it was that good! And the Clift Hotel is right next door which has a very nice Bar. A little pricey, but okay because they make great drinks. With the exception of the noise from the street, it was fantastic. There is a lot of horn honking in Union Square so I would suggest bringing EAR PLUGS to any hotel in the area. I wouldn't go for a stroll down Taylor street to often, especially at night. Its a bit seedy. On the flip side, Your in the heart of the Shopping district and the Yerba Buena center. I had a fabulous time Skating at the Yerba ice rink (indoor) and is beautiful. We had fantastic food, shopping till you drop along with Front row seats at a Macy's Fashion show, listened to live jazz music at a restaurant on Powell, and had the pleasure of getting to be there during Fleet Week. I would Highly recommend the Monaco hotel even under renovation.",Hotel Monaco Union Square- San Francisco 5,36,LukeandAlena,"We had an excellent three night stay at the hotel Monaco. The service was top notch. There is a free wine tasting every night from 5-6pm (we never actually made it back time, but saw people gathered). The hotel is blocks away from shopping, art museums, restaurants, the cable car system and a dueling piano bar (John Foleys)! The room was very stylish and cozy. The restaurant was closed for renovations, but the hotel staff is more than happy to order whatever you like and have it delivered directly to your room. The location is safe, clean and easy to access. I would recomend booking an airport shuttle for pickup on arrival and departure as taxi fares are steep. The shuttle is $17 per person, compared to $25-30 per person in a cab. The hotel staff booked our's effortlessly. Great stay. We will be back!",Loved our stay 4,37,Ken H,"First time we stayed here, and I was impressed: comfortable furnishings, stylish decor, and very well-maintained facility without the anonymity of the big-name hotel chains. The staff was courteous and professional, and they gave the impression that hospitality was something they enjoyed expressing. Like most older hotels, the room was not as spacious as those found in massive hotel complexes built adjacent to airports. But Monaco has a very urban feel to it, like staying in a smaller hotel in Vienna or Berlin.",A Touch of Luxury 5,38,Todd M,"Beautiful property staffed by well-trained and caring staff. I got an upgrade very easily even though it was the World Series--I couldn't believe it. Rooms are comfy, decor is eclectic, and going above and beyond is what Kimpton does, so you can easily get used to it. I truly cannot understand the negative reviews as I have experienced just the opposite here, and I do travel extensively. I know that to each his own, however. I also know that some people should not leave home or be allowed near a computer either.",Love Kimptom and Hotel Monaco 3,39,Arielmorg,"This is a pretty average, standard hotel. Not cool (questionable decor, old bathroom), ok location, small rooms and no space for clothes, feels old, and not a boutique hotel. Improvising on breakfast due to some renovations. Service is good (nothing to complain), and they offered free wifi, but certainly not one of the top hotels in SF. If you get a great price, maybe the equation gets better, but I cannot say I would return to this hotel.","Not my style, and big difference between my impression and Tripadvisor’s rating" 2,40,shahin10,"I was so excited to experience Hotel Monaco. I nearly spent money that i did not have to have this experience. Mainly I was not happy with the customer service. I, myself am in the hospitality industry and noticed that i was not being treated fairly as soon as i checked in. If customer service is a make or break for you this may not be a place to stay. I'm not sure if i was treated differently because i was younger but it really seemed that way. While checking in with my 2 other guests we witnessed a couple in front of us while checking in get asked if they needed help with their bags and assistence to their room. During my check-in experience I was not asked any of those questions. Meanwhile i had a suit case in my hand that was bigger than me, nor was i asked if i needed assistance to my room. This is just very disappointing. I did not feel like i was staying in a 4 star hotel. I was just very upset that i watched others get treated better, and the only reason i can come up with is because they were older, so maybe they have more respect for older adults? This is the first bad review i've ever left a hotel,i hate to do this but the front desk should be providing each individual guest the same assistance. I just hate being treated bad especially on a vacation. You still wanna feel like you're at home and i immediately was offended after witnessing others getting treated better.",my experience at hotel monaco SF 2,41,dawndru,"I'm mystified by the positive reviews of this hotel. It's not a terrible hotel. But it is not a 4 star hotel. It is a well-decorated 3 star. If it was less expensive and classified as 3 star I would have rated it as average, maybe even good. But at these prices it's ridiculous . First the positives: the lobby is beautiful and the small room clean and attractive. The location is great. Negatives: there appears to be 3 people that work in his large and expensive hotel. There was no one behind the check in desk when we arrived at 11pm. The concierge told us we'd have to wait because there was a shift change. Then there was breakfast. They are renovating their restaurant so they offered a continental breakfast which translates into giving each guest a green ticket which they can trade in for one pastry. Want a second pastry? Too bad. One of our friends forgot her ticket and was told to go and get one. If you're going to offer a continental breakfast, offer it. This was amateur hour.",Amateurish and not a 4 star 4,42,lucille02,This hotel is a great base for touring San Francisco. The staff were lovely and helpful. The room was clean and the decoration was elegant. There was a free glass of wine during the wine tasting session early evening. In the morning they offered a continental breakfast - coffee and a pastry OR a piece of fruit - sadly not both!,Great location 3,43,Theresehappymoments,I always stay at kimpton hotels and this was a bit of a let down. I love the one in San Diego but this one was missing somthing. The dinning for breakfast was not polite. The room had a horrible view of trash cans and the hotel was really loud. The next roomies a bunch of collage kids partying till 4 am. I would try another one of there hotels.,Just ok 5,44,ElmCityAfficionado,"I have stayed here three times and have always had a superb experience, but this time was the best, mostly because of the ABOVE-AND-BEYOND customer service by Lauren at the front desk. Our college student daughter and friend were staying there and shortly after checking into their room and dashing off to a concert, my daughter called me in a panic to say that she lost her wallet, with all of her cash, her ID, and her ATM card. We called the hotel and, long story short, Lauren found her wallet and called right away to tell us, thereby saving the weekend and putting my daughters mind at rest to enjoy the rest of the concert. The rooms in this hotel are terrific. The first time I stayed there, I needed a suite and got a spacious room with pocket doors separating the chic living room from the luxurious bedroom (with a jacuzzi in the bathroom.) Location is quite central and don't miss the great coffee early in the morning (or go to the Starbucks just a block or two away), the wine hour, and you can get goldfish in your room just by asking. I think all Kimptons are fabulous, but I have to say that the staff at this Monaco are truly special.",Best customer service of any SF hotel 1,45,Scott G,The hoteliers renovating to serve us better. That's great except let people know that you've no kitchen and that all your advertised spas are closed as well. Pretty bad to. Continue this. Charge full price for half the service and products.,Failure to disclose 5,46,Aaron212,"I've stayed in Monaco's over the years and have forgotten just how good they are. I come to SF a lot and often struggle w decent hotels at a decent rate- Hotel Monaco was pretty close to perfect. The location is excellent (a few blocks from Union Sq.) with great shopping and dinning at your doorstep. The lobby was lovely- you actually wanted to spend some time here. The staff was personable and demonstrated a true thankfulness for your business. The room was spacious (almost unheard of in SF)- had a large window with actual sightings of the sky (unlike many other SF hotels where you see another building 2' outside your window). Decor was classic and well maintained. Was traveling with my wife and 2 year old- as we checked out this morning the front desk staff gave my daughter a stuffed fish toy- they have just thought of everything (including coupons for free breakfast, happy hour in the lobby, fitness solutions, free wifi if you're a Kimpton member…). One thing to note is the restaurant is closed and under construction. Wasn't a problem for us as there are a lot of options near by- but be warned. Well done Hotel Monaco",Nailed it 4,47,susiega,"Decided to stay at this hotel because I was at the Monaco in Washington DC the month before. Love it! While others in my group stayed at the more 'business type' hotels - Hilton and Marriott, I was experiencing the quiet, boutiquey loveliness of the Monaco. Service here is great - and I love the coffee in the morning/wine in the afternoon opportunities - start a conversation with someone new if you desire, or sit quietly if you don't. No worries. The only thing I would have liked, though, would be an on-site restaurant for the late arriver. Location is great to everything you'd need or want to do downtown. Can't wait to come back!","Honestly, one of the best ever" 4,48,carriebleu,"We have stayed at a lot of Kimptons. Last year we stayed at the Argonaugt in the Wharf area. We loved that hotel, but wanted to get another vantage point to explore the city. We chose this hotel given it's proximity to Union Square. It's very close, but not on top of the square. The area the hotel is in is safe, but a bit too ""fringe"" for my taste. It's located at Geary and Taylor and you are from that point closer to the Tenderloin ( seedy area ) than I like to be. If I had to do it again, I would prob have chosen the Palomar for staying near that location. It's closer to the shopping areas and Financial district and more central to a better area overall. On a positive note, the room was good. Decor and furniture very comfortable and stylish. Bathroom small and not totally renovated, but it was nice. The staff is EXCELLENT. Always there to help and offer tips. There was no restaurant when we were there but they did offer coffee and pastry in the AM to make up for it. Overall our stay was good, but we would choose the Palomar or Argonaugt.",Very good hotel. 2,49,LizardAtlanta,"First of all, don't get lost the neighborhood is not safe and smells terrible. The room was fine but a bit noisy due to sirens all night. The staff was lacking. I put in my profile that I didn't want down in my room (allergic) - when I checked in at 4 the room ""wasn't ready"" because they hadn't seen the note. I asked to get in the room because I needed to get on a call. I was then interrupted 3 times as housekeeping banged on the door and screamed ""housekeeping"" while I was trying to conduct a call. The next morning I needed to take some pills so I went to enjoy the free pastries they provide since they don't have room service. Everything states that this will happen at 7:am. At 7:20 I asked about it since I needed to hit the road for a conference. The front desk told me they were running a ""couple of minutes late"" - I suggested 20 minutes wasn't a couple. It just seemed like the staff missed the kimpton training. When I checked out with the manager, I expected to be asked how my stay was and was looking forward to providing my feedback... but they never asked. I paid over $800 for two night and was very disappointed and it has made me question the Kimpton brand.",Meh - not your typical Kimpton 4,50,SlomoRootlinger,"Very comfortable, clean, and classy Boutique hotel. Our room was small, but quiet and clean. Restaurant was closed for renovations, but light breakfast was provided in the parlor, as well as wine in the afternoon. Front desk staff was helpful for tour and dining suggestions. Location was an easy walk to Union a Square and Chinatown. Prices were more reasonable than other hotels in the area. We would stay again.","Comfortable, classic" 5,51,steveboces1,"The Kimpton chain is really great! This was the second property I stayed in during the past 6 months and both live up to the reviews. The Monaco SF is a boutique hotel near Union Square and has a long history. It has been faithfully upgraded to very modern standards without losing its historical look and value. The lobby is magnificent with beautiful marble columns and a sitting area with working fireplace. I was upgraded to a suite which was very large and nicely done. Having said all of this, the best thing about the Kimptons may be their staff. At both properties the staff went out of their way to be extremely polite and helpful. In fact, on my last night there they ran out of reasonable rooms (my fault, not theirs) and sent me to another boutique hotel that is a competitor! Also, they have a free wine hour every evening. I recommend the chain generally and this hotel in particular.",Fabulous Boutique Hotel 3,52,CHIJDB,"My wife and I recently stayed at the Hotel Monaco for 4 night stay while primarily sightseeing in San Francisco. The hotel staff was very friendly and all interactions with them were positive. The room was big enough and very clean but lacked a bathroom vent fan which made it hard to shave after my wife used the shower, My only negative comment is the lobby and living room area lacked seating and during the evening wine hour there was no place to sit. I had some concerns about the location and proximity to the Tenderloin District but after spending 4 days in the area I can say for certain there was absolutely no reason for any concerns. There were some bums and presumably junkies hanging around but none was aggressive at all. Anyone whose spent any time in any large city would find the area near the hotel to be perfectly safe.",Decent all around but lacking amenities 5,53,Rwgaston,"The room is beautiful and very spacious. Extremely friendly staff and amazing location. We have 2 boys and within an hour of check-in, the staff showed up with snacks for the boys and the hotel's goldfish, Rex, for our stay. I am blown away! How sweet is that? Lovely fireplaces and complimentary fruit/pastries in morning, Nightly 5PM cocktail hour.",Beyond impressed! 5,54,BradNathan,"Such a nice collective of staff there! The hotel was going through construction but they were as accommodating as possible. The bathrooms could use an update but it is clean and again, the staff couldn't be better - Brooke & Laura at the front desk were great. The lobby is also awesome!! Brad",Monaco - SF 5,55,michelle h,"I love the Kimpton chain and this hotel confirmed why. It has personality and style delivered with such a warm and generous welcome. Everything about the Monaco is generous and warm from the staff and the wine hour to the lush decor and access to free bikes to tour the city. It isn't cheap but I think given the complete package it is good value for San Francisco. A few special mentions - well done for having opening windows, it is so nice to be able to have fresh air in the city. Also being a tea drinker staff were quick to provide me with a kettle and cups, much appreciated. Every request was met with a willing 'can do' attitude which is a complement to the staff and management.",An oasis in the centre of the city 1,56,Gareth N,Awful experience. The renovation to the restaurant involved constant pneumatic drilling between 9am - 5pm making the room completely unusable during this time and impossible for us to recover from our jet lag (we had travelled from London).,Disappointing 5,57,gchrist256,Nicely furnished and maintained older hotel in San Francisco near Union Square. Staff are very welcoming and efficient. We had a junior suite which was quite large and and very quiet. Location is central to most San Francisco attractions. We stayed two nights and found it very pleasant.,Nice location in San Francisco 5,58,Colin D,"The Monaco in San Francisco made us very welcome, as we expected from earlier stays in their DC property. We were welcomed with wine in the rooms for twin sisters' birthdays. The rooms were excellent, the hotel well-placed and the staff very attentive. The restaurant was closed for renovations and the free breakfast alternative was a bit thin, but they did listen to our suggestion and add bananas to the fruit! We will certainly stay there again. C & M",Great Stay 1,59,USCott,"If you want honest advertisement, responsive management, or a room that is quiet, clean, or comfortable, don’t stay here. There were countless deficiencies: (1) Deceptive website and unresponsive, insensitive management. This is my biggest complaint. See details below. (2) Loud construction and no restaurant. Although they attempt to provide one piece of fruit and one dinky pastry to compensate, they do not even have plates or silverware available to eat with. We were told to go back to our room and call the front desk to request a knife to be delivered--what?!?! (3) Almost no counter space in the bathroom. A small toiletry bag will overhang the sink no matter where you put it and get wet. The only other alternative is on top of the toilet. I don't want wet or fecal toiletries, do you? (4) Dirty and disgusting window casements that may never have been cleaned (5) A desk so small, it is almost useless (especially after you use it to place your toiletries). (6) A noisy mini-fridge located in the nightstand right next to your head makes intermittent noise all day and night (surely they could have put this somewhere else in a suite) (7) Almost no useful drawer space (perhaps because what should have been drawer space was instead occupied by a mini-fridge!) (8) Cracked tile around the tub faucet (9) A hand shower that forces you against the wall of the shower because it is loose and does not stay in position (I don't particularly enjoy rubbing up against foreign hotel shower tiles, do you?). Later in our trip, we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and had much better experience at a lower class of hotel. Further on (1) above: We booked a Junior Suite to get a suite with a separate bedroom so we could put our toddler to bed early and have our own separate space. The website indicates that suites generally include, ""Five different suite types...Separate living room with queen-size sleeper sofa."" When we checked in at 8:30p with our tired, grumpy 2 year old, we were surprised to find that there was no separate living room at all. We were advised that while all other suite types do have a separate bedroom, the Junior Suites do not because when looking at their website you are expected to put your lawyer hat on to infer that ""a bedroom with king-size bed and a queen-size sleeper sofa"" means there is no door in the Junior Suite at all. What does ""separate"" mean? Separate from the bathroom?...the hallway? The room description must specifically indicate that it is ""Separated by a sliding door."" They suggested we could upgrade to a larger suite that would be available on the day we planned to check out—a useless solution. We were then advised we could leave and find another hotel which would have cost substantially more money if we did not accept being deceived. That would have entailed taking a mini-van full of kid supplies many blocks away when we had already pre-paid for parking only 1 block away. They offered only to waive our cancellation fee, another totally useless and token gesture. But we were assured the manager would be advised of our predicament the next morning. The manager never contacted us or even acknowledged our complaint. When we again reiterated our dissatisfaction upon checkout, we were told we should have called to verify the structure of the room upon booking. Who does that? Maybe they shouldn’t lie on their website! How is that?","AVOID!!! Deceptive, Insensitive, Noisy, Dirty, and Not Functional" 5,60,ktshaffer,"Great central location - near to cable car line, Union Square, good restaurants. Very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel's bar and restaurant were under renovation during our stay so hotel offered complimentary continental breakfast. It is in the theater district, but we did not take advantage of seeing any performances. Bed was very comfortable.",Great place in the middle of it all 5,61,MichelleN301,"My husband and I had our first Kimpton experience in Portland Oregon, it was perfect and unique. Our second experiene was with the family in Bar Harbour Maine. I knew I had hit the mark when our girls gasped with excitement when we walked in the room and the large high definition TV had a surreal scene of an aquarium playing. The decour is unique and tastefully done on each property. Some may say a little over the top, but I love it! I feared all the colors shown for the Monaco property would be too much but they put the excitement on the wall behind the headboard for that initial walk in pow and the walls you stare out while at rest are more toned down, yet tastefully matched. The bathroom was an interesting respite of black and white. Our most fun was realizing we could order our own pet fish as company during our stay. Another thing my girls and I loved. The wine happy hour seems to be standard at all the hotels as well as superb customer service. Although this is a pricey hotel, I've always felt the staff was highly welcoming even when we were looking a bit forlorn and tattered. Valet is crazy expensive it seems at all the properties, so this time we opted to drop off our rental and learn the public transit system, very graciously offered by front desk staff. SF has a great subway system in which we were able to go over to Berkley and then to the airport upon leaving. I would stay here again but since SF has so many Kimptons, if I went back I'd love to explore a new Kimpton as well as a new part of SF.",Love the Goldfish 5,62,BobHollMusic,"We stayed at the Hotel Monaco for one night. We booked the hotel for a Sunday night and also wanted to stay there on Monday night but because of the significant price increase (the convention business at many hotels in the area) we had to search for another hotel for Monday in our price range. During their wine happy hour, I mentioned our situation to the front desk manager Clayton Bishop. He immediately went to work on it right away. He definitely went out of his way and brought us other hotel options at various price ranges and locations to choose from. We chose the Argonaut on Fisherman's Wharf for our next night, another Kimpton hotel. Thanks Clayton for your amazing service! Another person I would like to give a shout out to is guest services manger James Greer. I've never met a person more willing to help with restaurant suggestions, shopping, and how to handle our transfer to the other hotel, etc. James along with Clayton, made us feel very special! Thanks guys for your wonderful caring personalities and attitudes! Thanks also for the wonderful surprise bottle of wine we found upon our arrival at the Argonaut! About the Monaco: It has a beautiful lobby, smaller rooms but clean and they have a nice appearance and atmosphere. We enjoyed their wine hospitality hour and pastries, coffee, juice, the next morning. Hotel Monaco is located a few blocks from Union Square. We were a little nervous because the hotel is close to a seedy area. However we always felt safe and you just have to remember to walk in the correct direction when leaving the hotel. There are lots of wonderful dining options also in the area. We love San Francisco and love the Hotel Monaco! Kimpton service continues to shine!","The Hotel Monaco, Kimpton service continues to shine!!" 4,63,Carolina099,Staff is very friendly and helpful. Room was big with a lovely bed and a good sized bathroom. Furniture and carpets are a bit tired. The area is great for shopping and very close to Union Square. Many junkies around but that's San Francisco. Valet parking is definitely too expensive and the restaurant was closed for renovation so they offered free breakfast because of that (coffee/tea and one pastry). Soundproof windows would be good at night.,Great central location with friendly staff 5,64,travellingtim519,Only stayed one night in this superb hotel. Rooms were spotlessly clean and well equipped. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Valet parking is extremely expensive but you can reduce the cost by driving round the block and using the valet parking at a car park at the rear of the hotel.,Perfect stay 5,65,xJEFFROx,"This was my first time at this property, but I have been to quite a few other Kimptons. It seems like everyone that works for this chain actually likes their job! And they really are happy to give suggestions for places to go & things to do. The helpful person at the front desk was happy to share an upscale seafood restaurant suggestion to the people who were checking in before us. And even happier to point us in the direction of the nearest ""dive bar!” Kimpton may cost a few $$ more, but factor in the wine hour, prime location, fresh rooms and great service? I think it's totally worth it!",Kimpton never disappoints 5,66,Michael J,"We spent two nights at the Monaco, our first at this hotel. We've stayed in numerous Kimpton properties, some better than others; this was by far the best. The hotel is a good size -- small enough for the front desk staff to remember us after two days and to offer a hosted wine hour in the afternoon. The public spaces are beautiful, including the hallways. Our room was very comfortable, nicely appointed and as nice as rooms in many of the better hotels where we've stayed. As Kimpton Karma members, we were welcomed with an email from the manager before we arrived and greeted with a bottle of wine and snacks in the room. Aside from the urban noise expected in San Francisco, the room was reasonably quiet. The fitness center was well enough equipped for a good workout -- 2 treadmills, and a few elipticals, free weights, and a couple of machines -- not as extensive as some, but more than sufficient. Nice spa, too. Location a few blocks from Union Square was very convenient - easy walk to BART, only about 20 minutes to the Ferry Building. I find the big San Francisco hotels too anonymous and tour-group or convention oriented and the smaller boutique hotels don't have such great facilities. Monaco is the perfect inbetween choice and my new go-to hotel in San Francisco.",Perfect stay in San Francisco 5,67,Nevileon,"A fantastic stay - my first with the Kimpton line. Rooms were stylishly appointed, and my inner circle welcome amenity included hand-picked treats which exactly matched the survey I previously filled out as part of their membership club (asked for local craft beer - they did not disappoint). The nightly wine service was a nice touch - and twice there were treats and a massage therapist present for a quick 10 minute tune-up - complementary. The property itself is on the edge of what would be considered the Tenderloin and Union Square, but I always felt safe. My view was simple, and city oriented - but in SF - one shouldn't be staying in the room much. My only regret is that I did not get to see the hotel in its full splendor. Renovations were underway to open up the ballroom (we got complementary breakfast for the inconvenience) and the spa closed a couple days into my stay (but it was quite nice with a Jacuzzi, dry sauna and steam room). YMMV with the massage (I probably wouldn't repeat it - but there was a raid the spa certificate so nothing ventured, nothing lost). There's a lot of traffic noise (yay SF firetrucks - light sleepers should be advised. The business centre is on the pricey side, with payments required both for light printing and any computer time used. The part I'm truly gushing about though is the personalized service. Two front desk staff / managers started welcoming me back to the hotel by name starting the second day of my stay. Johnathan also gave great advice for day activities, and his local expertise really shone through. I was truly impressed and will be staying again at this property the next time I need to stay in SF.",Great Service 5,68,camg30,"it is my third time in San Francisco, this is the best hotel that i have stayed so far. Of course, it is expensive compared with the previous ones, but It was a good decision. It is not a big hotel, which give you a better service. Its well located, two blocks from the Union Square, Free Wi Fi and all the services close by. And something that its very important, the hotel's people was very kind try to solve any issue that you could have",Expensive but the location and service was excellent 5,69,jwaltaz,"We really liked this hotel's location. Within easy walking distance of key tourist locations, but also bordering upon a very different, edgier district that offered us a more compete San Fransisco experience. Our room was quirky and interesting as were the hotel's public spaces. We found the afternoon cheese and wine a little reserved and formal, but I am sure the atmosphere depends upon the ""guest mix"" at any one point in time. All in all excellent value and we will return.",Just what we needed 5,70,mielleuse,"We took a 10th anniversary trip to San Francisco and Sonoma County and were pleasantly surprised by the Hotel Monaco. We read some of the negative reviews and were concerned, but found them to be completely inaccurate (at least our experience). We mentioned our anniversary in our reservation, and were greeted with an upgraded room and sparkling wine in our room and a hand-written card! We were so touched! There was some noise in the room, but nothing that in anyway took away from the experience. San Francisco is a big city - there will be noise. And yes there are a lot of homeless people, but again it's a city. I never felt unsafe walking in the immediate area surrounding the hotel. We did venture about 5 blocks west (I think) into the Tenderloin looking for a dive bar I had read about online, and it is a bit gritty, but the area around the hotel is fine. We knew about the restaurant being closed in advance and did not find this to be an issue at all. There are probably a dozen hotels and restaurants in a 2 block radius. The Warwick with a very nice bar is literally across the street. In about 2 minutes you are in Union Square. Also appreciated the pastries and coffee in the mornings. Both mornings the selection was slightly different and fresh. I'm not sure I have ever stayed in such a conveniently located hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again if we are ever in San Francisco again!!",Wonderful Experience 5,71,Chris W,"We stayed here at the end of august beginning of September for 4 nights, when we arrived we already knew about the restaurant being closed due to refurb so this didn't bother us one bit, upon arrival the staff were very welcoming and friendly, offering tips and advice about the city unprompted. We had a double room on the 8th floor overlooking the Hilton. It was clean fresh and quirky perfect for us. The hotel is situated on the fringe of the tenderloin one of the less desirable neighbourhoods in San Francisco. But if you read anything about it being a ""dodgy location"" ignore them there being silly, San Francisco is a wonderful place but you must keep your wits about you like any city. When we went out to explore I spoke with a chap on the front desk who advised me with a map of areas to avoid he was very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The hotel is a few blocks from Union square and a 5 minute walk from the Powell street BART station. There you can also cross the road to the large Westfield shopping centre. When it came to breakfast we assumed we would have to go out each morning but to our surprise the hotel gave us 4 vouchers each to use in there lounge each morning. Free coffee, free iced coffee and tea. 100% freshly squeezed fruit juices, a fantastic selection of muffins and fresh pastries and as selection of fruit. Daily local a nationwide newspapers and plenty of places to sit. Can you ask anymore??? No it was a perfect touch of class from a lovely hotel who have only closed the restaurant to improve it, I have read reviews on here of people moaning about the noise and the free breakfast as a substitute not being good enough it's rubbish yeh there was noise but why are you sat in your hotel room anyway? Go out and explore this extraordinary city. We went on to LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Vegas and New York after we stayed here and struggles to find the same hospitality offered here. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so memorable.",Brilliant base to discover the city 4,72,KTITA,"I booked the hotel through Hotwire and all seemed to be going smoothly till I called the hotel the day before our trip to find out the reservation was for a room with just one bed. Hotwire did not do much about that, and at the hotel I spoke with Daniel, who said they would try to change my reservation. I was hoping for a solution... The location is convenient, right off Union Square. if you come from the airport, it is just a few block from the BART station, on Powell St. We arrived early at the hotel and they were all very nice and professional. They offered to keep our luggage stored till the room was ready, and we left to explore SanFran. Our room was clean, spacious and very comfortable with free wifi. The decor is different and fun, outside the traditional hotel setup. The only drawback was that the hotel is undergoing some construction and even on Saturday the pounding noise was in full force. Luckily, by 5pm sharp the noise was gone. Things seem to have been nicely arranged at this property. The toiletries are nice and they go beyond with the list of toiletries with which they can provide guests who forgot to bring their own. Very thoughtful! The staff is friendly, attentive and resourceful. Austin at the front desk was very kind and helpful. The hotel hosts a wine happy hour near the lobby, and in the morning they also offer yummy pastries, coffee, juice and tea. They also have bikes that guests can borrow and go to explore town. Overall, this property has made a very good impression, I had a pleasant stay and would certainly stay here again.",Very pleasant stay 2,73,fran k,"Modern hotel, location ok and we picked this due to the spa facilities. However when we arrived we were told that due to the restaurant refurbishment the spa was also closed due to it being underneath the restaurant. Really disappointed with this as that was the reason we booked this hotel and they have only offered a gym pass 2 blocks away that has a lap pool facility as an alternative. I find this a poor alternative to a sauna and steam room experience. No other offers or compensation offered so very disappointed. Hopefully our holiday company will be able to do something.",No spa access as advertised 5,74,Minneapolis24,This was my second time staying at this property and I will definitely be back again. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful and they even let borrow a free bike to check out the city! The hotel is very nice and is just blocks from Union Station and the BART. It's in a great central location to explore the city from - highly recommended (and make sure to join their free rewards program to get all sorts of fun perks)!,"Great service, free bikes and fun location!" 4,75,ALNNJ,"The Monaco was first class with their decor, amenities and service. It is always good to be thanked for returning to a hotel letting me know my business matters. Along with the complementary water, morning coffee and wine hour my Karma membership provides me with free wi if and $10 to raid their mini bar. Located close to Bart and close to a Union Square, the hotel is centrally located.",In the unique tradition of the Kimpton Brand 5,76,Love2travel2LA,"We will not even stay in San Francisco if we can't stay at the Kimpton. We LOVE everything about this hotel. The front desk is young and friendly, the dogs, the happy hour, the spa, the quirky rooms and even the gold fish that dies every time we stay there. We could not be happier.",San Francisco only at the Kimpton 4,77,rebeccang,"I stayed at this hotel for the labor day weekend 2014. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay but as with the NYC Kimpton hotel on Park Ave in my other review, this hotel is undergoing renovations during the week days. Apparently the restaurant is being refurbished so there is no eating facility in this hotel now. Seems like the last 2 Kimpton hotels are being remodeled and the noise level was annoying. The Hotel Monaco has a 2 beautiful lobbies which are hardly used. One lobby is used in the morning for complimentary continental breakfast between 8-9am but coffee/tea is available from 5am on. The breakfast pastries were very tasty and fresh. The hotel elevators were remodeled but still looked old, although quite efficient. I had booked my 3 night stay about 3 months ago on Hotels.com which did not give me any points toward my Kimpton Rewards (very disappointing since the hotel website fees per room was more expensive). Also, I was given an ADA room. When I asked ""why"" they said that it was the only room available for the length of stay I requested. I also requested a higher floor but was put on the 4th floor overlooking Geary street which was noisy even during the night. The front receptionist said that the higher floors were already rented out. If that was the case, they should double/triple insulate the windows on the lower floors to filter out the street sounds. The bed and room and bath was very comfortable and large since it was an ADA room. However, I cannot figure out why they gave me that room instead of an ordinary room. I did peak inside a standard room and it appeared much smaller than the one I received so I guess I was lucky to be considered ADA qualified. This hotel is 2 blocks from Union Square which is wonderful since one cannot hear the cable car and the square noise from this location. I did hear sirens during the night and also could hear the street traffic from my room. This property is an easy walk from the Powell St BART station and even I made the trek with my roller bag and carryon, considering I'm over 65 and was traveling alone and am really out of shape. All in all, I did like this old but not boutique hotel. It is clean, the linens are clean and in good shape, and the staff is very accommodating. Oh, yes, this hotel is pet friendly too although I did not see any four-legged critters while I was there. I would still definitely stay at this hotel again despite the negatives in this review. The positives do outweigh the negatives during my visit.",Good location but still an old hotel 3,78,Carmen B,"I first stayed at the Hotel Monaco over 10 years ago and immediately fell in love with it. It was a boutique hotel and unlike other hotels at that time had charm and panache but still delivered on all the service and luxury details that other more well-known hotels of the time delivered on as well. it had a happy hour and tea breaks and was all around delightful. Ten years later I find myself in a job that requires travel and decided to renew my friendship with the Hotel Monaco. It was a bit like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a while you used to be stunning and who's started to let them go a bit. You're hoping they get it back together and regain their former glory. During my stay, there was construction going on which was a bit loud. The restaurant was closed so there was no room service either. The lobby was a bit dated and in need of a refresh. Once the restaurant reopens I fully intend to give it another go and hope it will make a comeback. But I would hold off until January when that happens before reconnecting with my old friend.",Great old friend in need of a facelift 2,79,Bri221,"Usually a favourite HOWEVER the restaurant construction noise is unbearable - jack hammers, etc (9am to 5pm). We had a long flight and were ""trying"" to rest during the day but it was not to be. Call first to see if construction is finished - if not I would suggest staying elsewhere. I wish the hotel management had been more upfront about the construction noise. They do have a ""notation"" on their website that states...""The Hotel Monaco's iconic Grand Café, which served San Francisco for over 20 years, has closed their doors for good. While we are busy cooking up something new in its place ..."" - NO mention of any construction. I was very disappointed that their bottom line was of more importance than my comfort as a paying guest.",Construction ongoing - call first before booking 4,80,Danielle B,"before arriving we read a few reviews which criticised the attitude and friendliness of reception staff, we found that in our experience the staff were very polite, friendly and helpful, they showed a genuine interest in us. we knew in advance about the renovation so it would be unfair to mark down for lack of restaurant facilities but there was no negative affect, no noise, due to the work being carried out. the room was clean and spacious and the bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds we have had. would have preferred a coffee machine or kettle in our room as standard but overall it was a nice comfortable base for our holiday and would return.",A good base for our holiday 3,81,Robert O,The property is undergoing a massive renovation of their restaurant. This includes removing concrete pillars with jackhammers. The din in the lobby is overwhelming and the sound permeates the entire hotel. When we checked in last week it was so loud we literally had to yell at the staff to be heard. The hotel manager was very accomodating and helpful but there is only so much that can be done.,Call and talk with them to find out about the restaurant project before booking 3,82,chantelleko,"I like Kimpton hotels but this one just didn't do it for me. I know a lot of hotels in San Fran are older and sometimes it is hard to see past that (small lobbies, small, slow elevators, small rooms). Customer Service was excellent - rooms were clean and secure - it just wasn't a favourite hotel of mine. Rooms are quite small as is the bathroom - was cramped for 2 friends travelling together. Windows looking out were extremely dirty. There is also a large homeless population roaming across the street; I was told the ""Tenderloin"" district is 2 blocks away and the homeless come to the touristy area to beg. Across the street was a small market, a liquor store and a Walgreens which was very convenient. I prefer to have a coffee machine in my room for first thing in the AM which they did not supply, however there was a free continental breakfast in the lobby (which we did not take advantage of). I plan on staying by the wharf on my next San Fran visit.",Nice hotel but very middle of the road 2,83,LondonLucyA,"Don't get me wrong, I am a MASSIVE Kimpton fan after having had the most amazing experience in NYC last year for my bday. So much so that we booked kimpton hotels in SFO, LA and La Jolla for our current trip (we are currently at the hotel Monaco as I write this). Compared to the reception we received in Vegas and Mammoth lakes prior to arriving at the Monaco this was cold, no Californian hospitality - just can I see your ID and credit card. I knew in advance the design was quirky (I like quirky) but this seems dated and tired - see photos attached. I even question if our room is meant to be superior - good luck to everyone else. There is no bar or restaurant currently ( you get a voucher for ""complimentary breakfast"" in the morning. Which you do not receive unless you show the voucher ( show some trust! Why else would we be here at 7am ??) went to take out one of the complimentary bikes which were all taken. Renovations going on next door blah blah blah. All in all not the best kimpton experience - just hope it shapes up before LA and La Jolla! :)",So disappointed 3,84,shmendrick,"We travel to San Francisco every two years or so to get our opera fix at the War Memorial Opera house. It's a delightful, slightly shabby Beaux Arts edifice with a lot of character. I guess you could say that about a lot of San Francisco buildings, especially hotels. The Hotel Monaco is no exception with its warm entry salon and renovated rooms which reflect the Barbary Coast era where anything went in this town. Sort of like now, come to think of it. Anyway, we booked a junior suite, and so were expecting 2 separate rooms. What it is, however, is a standard room with a slightly enlarged sitting area with a sofa bed. Okay, so far, but not ideal. What they don't tell you is that these rooms are adjacent to the elevators. I'll admit it was quieter than I expected, but elevator noise was still noticeable. Better upgrade to the deluxe suite, where there's a divider. Other issues not specific to this hotel is the increase in room rates. We booked this a little over a year in advance. The going rate now is about 30% higher. Oh well.",Nice but watch out for the junior suite 4,85,Jildatheonly,"This hotel's location is superb, the ambience comforting, upbeat, and friendly. I was amused that many guests showed up for morning coffee in the lobby in their pj's and robes! And that I could get a goldfish to keep me company. My room was small, but very clean, quiet, and well appointed. I walked to close by shopping, restaurants, and even dragged about twelve bags full back from a fabric store not far away. The staff was delightful too.",Work Week Comforts 4,86,Wary_Traveler1,"I have to say I had a couple of issues with my stay. However, the length the hotel staff went to to make me happy and address my concerns invalidated anything worth writing bad about. The only real disappointment was they did not have a restaurant or room service because they are remodeling and putting in a new restaurant for 2015",Good and bad 1,87,Lara S,"JACKHAMMER!!! What is the one thing you do not want to be woken up by in the morning? A non stop jackhammer that is working to renovate their restaurant...that you were not informed of until you call the front desk and have to shout over the jackhammer noise to explain your frustration. I would recommend NOT staying at this hotel if you plan on being in the hotel in any capacity between the hours of 8-5 M-F as you won't be able to hear yourself think let alone converse or even attempt to rest. According to the front desk there is nothing they can do and ""because it was posted on their website"" I should have known about it and not stayed here if a jackhammer was undesirable. Very poor customer service Kimpton. I'll remember this when considering your other brands.",JACKHAMMER! 5,88,Graham B,"Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of a trip of California. Could not say enough good things about the hotel Monaco. Amazing staff, amazing rooms and the location is brilliant! First stay at a Kimpton hotel, but definitely not the last!!!",Excellent start to a trip 4,89,kag10,"Stayed here for 4 nights at the end of a trip to Seattle & before a flight back to NZ. We picked this hotel as we have stayed at other Kimpton hotels & have never been disappointed. We certainly weren't here either! This hotel is in a great location, close to Union Square & within walking distance of a number of shops & restaurants. We took BART from SFO then walked a few blocks to the hotel - just a hint, walk up Powell to Geary then along to the hotel, not along Eddy & up Taylor to avoid feeling a little uncomfortable wheeling suitcases amongst some of the locals. The room was lovely, not such a great view of a back alley, but off to the side so we weren't disturbed by any noise, only by the Napa earthquake! The lack of restaurant at the hotel was no issue as recommendations were provided by the staff, some we may not have tried otherwise & really enjoyed, such as Colibri. The staff are friendly & helpful, no issue storing bags for the last day & gave us a space for a bit of last minute re-packing after we had already checked out. Will definitely stay here again",Great location 5,90,CharlotteCollins,"Hotel doesn't look much from the outside but inside it's amazing. Room was brilliant, service great, location just fantastic. Frech restaurant/cafe attached was great too. Modern & great value, right in the centre of town, would love to return.",Brilliant 5,91,CJordanSpeake,"Although this hotel was expensive, it was a GREAT location. It was two blocks away from Union Square and central to the other San Francisco tourist locations (AT&T Ball park, Painted Ladies, Exploratorium, Pier 39, etc). The rooms were comfortable and the staff was helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Join the Kimpton Karma Rewards Program before making a reservation.",A very pretty penny! 4,92,JC_chgo,"I was somewhat surprised by how French the hotel looked. Great ornate lobby. The magenta walls in my room were ok with the modern French decor, but I would have preferred something calmer. The room itself was very quiet, we were at the back away from Geary, our window overlooked Taylor. There was no traffic noise at all. The window opened, so since it was cool-ish, we opened it and got some fresh air- still not noisy. I was in a king room, and my only complaint: the bathroom was TINY, and I've stayed in some hotels with tiny bathrooms. This was the TINY-EST. If you can handle that, then everything's fine. If you need something slightly larger, you won't like the room that much.","Great location, Nice Hotel" 2,93,Rhodipeey,"This hotel was the last stop on our honeymoon. We had been spoilt in Las Vegas where we stayed at the Mandarin oriental and equally so at the modern Honolulu in Hawaii, so when we arrived and were told there was no restaurant or bar, due to refurbishment we were very disappointed. I completely agree with other reviews on here , the area is dodgy particularly at night with many homeless people wandering and asking for money as well as people hanging around in groups on street corners. When we got to our room (Queen deluxe) , we were left a little underwhelmed. The room was small, however it was clean and tidy. Another grievance (not mine my Wife's) was the lack of duvet cover! The duvet was just placed between two flat sheets and therefore moved in the night for the duvet to then touch her skin, which she thought was very unhygienic! As mentioned above due to there not being a restaurant we were given complimentary breakfast tokens , which allowed each person to a pastry and a coffee, disappointing. As we arrived very late in the evening and due to the area being some what concerning, we were recommended to order a take away. The concierge were helpful in making the call for us. On our last night we wished to eat out and couldn't get hold of concierge to make the booking for us, we dialled from our hotel room phone. On check out we were charged 8 dollars ( not that this is a big amount) for concierge calling the take away, then booking a reservation at one restaurant and for the 1 minute call we made on our last night. We were disgusted by this as the hotel provided no food or beverages and we had no other choice but to eat and drink out. Overall this hotel is poor, the staff are helpful and friendly enough but this does not make up for the poor amenities and high prices. This hotel thinks it is a lot better than it actually is, we will be looking elsewhere if we go back to San Francisco.","Dodgy area, no duvet cover and phone call charges!" 4,94,Franco C,This is a nice hotel in the centre of S Francisco. Confortable and easy access to all amenities. The only pathetic thing was the complimentary breakfast. Although complimentary it would have been better not to have offered it. Either you offer a breakfast or You do not offer it at all. It is no good to have a coffee and one toffee and then have to complete the breakfast elsewhere. Its a nonsense. This requires managerial attention.,Nice Liberty Hotel in the Centre of San Francisco 4,95,UtedB,Walking distance to Union Square. Top quality service in terms of staff and cleanliness. Standard size room and bathroom. Liked the design very much. The lobby is rather dark but this is part of their design I guess.,"Location, service quality and nice colours" 4,96,TheCains,"First time at this Kimpton. Vibe of hotel is trendy but still warm. Very good customer service. Room was super clean and functional - not huge, but this is San Francisco. Had less than a stellar breakfast in the hotel restaurant and without asking manager comped the meal. Pros.",Kimpton delivers 4,97,lisa028,"We combined our family's summer vacation with college visits in California and started the adventure on August 12th in San Francisco. Four of us stayed in a suite at Hotel Monaco for one night, including my husband and our two teenagers. Pluses: - Helpful, courteous staff - Comfortable beds and thick walls/curtains made for a comfortable sleep, helped also by air conditioning - Layout of the room (Size isn't too bad considering you are in the city) - Chilled citrus water in the front lobby - Overall decor (Lobbies, ""living room,"" room decor and small touches like fun robes) - Morning coffee and juice bar (We missed the wine reception, which sounds lovely.) Disappointments: - As others have mentioned, the neighborhood has seen better days. Our teenagers, who often rush out to explore without us when we travel, decided to stick around the hotel. - The ""breakfast"" line reminded me of lining up for rations at summer camp. - This is a nit, but the grout/caulking in the bathroom tub needed a pick-me-up Bottom line: A good night's sleep at a high price. The hotel is just fine for families, but waterfront options may better even better for travelers with children and teens.",A Good Night’s sleep 3,98,RippeyCambNZ,"Great location to Union Square and many tourist attractions. We had a car and parking was easy at a near by car park, $25US per day. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. Had a room on the top floor 7. Rooms were clean and tidy, bed good except the pillows - needed to ask for softer flatter pillows. Internet free and most of the time worked really well. Unfortunately we were not aware the restaurant and bar was closed due to being refurbished. The noise from the construction work was heard in our room, and was not nice when my husband was trying to have a rest in the afternoon or do some work. When discussed with the gentleman at the front desk he was very good and explained why they had not advised us of the situation ( we booked via Expedia) and was able to give us a discount. Thank you. Breakfast was not a good experience. Our allocation was one pastry or scone and one piece of fruit per person plus juice and coffee. First morning we arrived a few mins after 9am (9:03) and they had already packed away everything and there was no offer of getting anything for us. For anyone not use to big cities be aware in this area there are many street people begging or just in their own little world.",Great location but hotel is under construction….. 5,99,Una L,We decided to stay a night in San Fran for a night while on our way to Monterey. The hotel was super welcoming and friendly. The rooms were tight but really cool and clean. I was really happy to see how close it was to union square. We walked and walked and loved our visit. This hotel is a no brainer,Quick stop in 4,100,amplexusomnium,"This was my first trip to San Fran so I didn't know what to expect, but I did expect more. This hotel was great even though the room was smaller than some I have stayed in NYC! The staff was friendly and accommodating at the hotel and restaurant. They even had a wine hour with snacks, which was a nice touch. My complaints come from the area the hotel was in which was awful and filled with drug users. If I went back I would recommend staying by the wharf. Overall I felt disappointed by the city, but thankful I had a great place to stay each night and was glad I spent the extra money!",Overall Good Stay
