First, I was told my room was ready - I go up and it hadn't been cleaned from previous occupant. to their credit, they left a bottle of wine in my room when moved to a clean one, but given that I was on a very busy schedule that day (arrival day), it had me behind schedule. That was ok overall and they tried to make up for the error. Next problem? Restaurant closed and in process of renovation with jackhammers running daily. Had I known, I would NOT have chosen this hotel for my busy work visit in which I needed quiet time in hotel to do work. they had a notice in the room apologizing for this... but I needed to know that when I booked. Major problem for me. Lastly, on way to airport, the concierge arranges a car to get me to airport. Sold me on the fact that it was raining and with the slowdown, might be cheaper than taxi (quoted price was $15 more than the taxi I had taken in). Moreover, I was told that gratuity was included. With that and the potential for a slower ride (with a higher potential metered price) I took the offer. After picked up the driver was clearly agitated that I was told gratuity was included. No slowdown whatsoever. hence, I had a cab ride that was far more expensive than a normal metered cab and put the driver in an unfair position. I tipped by he refused, knowing that the concierge had misinformed me. that is uncool. Not the worst infractions, but at $300/night, I expected more. And, the errors were unacceptable. It’s centrally located, short walk to Market Street, Union Square, the Convention Center (we were in San Francisco for a convention), MUNI and BART station on Powell Street, maybe 15 minute walk along Market to the Embarcadero. Good price, not super fancy but pleasant, well maintained, and pretty for the money (lovely lobby level, with two fireplaces). As with other Kimpton Hotels this Hotel Monaco hosts a wine hour in the evenings, which is always nice. The restaurant is under renovation, so it was closed while we were there, so to make up for it they provided a pastry and a piece of fruit in the mornings, which we appreciated. The only negatives about the Monaco was that they charged to use the computers in the business center and to print anything (except boarding passes, which are free), which just seems unnecessarily stingy. And while the street that the hotel is on has theaters, galleries, and high end shops, it is only a couple of blocks from the Tenderloin, which can be a bit rough for some tastes.",Good price and convenient location

There was no restaurant because it was being remodeled, so, they gave us vouchers for a free pastry and piece of fruit for each person. Well, they originally gave us two less than we should have received, so I had to ask for more. That was a bit tacky, how cheap they were about the breakfast situation. They were very strict about it. On the other hand, they had excellent teas and organic coffee available, which totally made up for it. If you want a coffee maker in your room, you have to ask for it. If you stay there, do not walk south toward market. It's very seedy in that area. Walking east along Geary St toward Market St is fine though. The public transportation system was wonderful and we used it to go all over SF. We didn't wait longer than 10 minutes for any bus, except once, late at night. Now, keep in mind that I'm not referring to the trolleys, which are expensive and more of just a tourist attraction. I am referring to the buses. Tip, check out Buena Vista Park while you're in SF. It doesn't seem to be very well-known, and it's incredible and free. Be ready to walk uphill a good distance and see amazing views. Bring the camera.",Very Clean and Great Ambience

OK... fine so we asked if we could use the hot tub and steam room, but they were also under contraction and off limits... So you know there is nothing else to do in this hotel besides eat and relax in the hot tub. We were paying over $390 a night and we would not be abel to relax at all.. So we called down to speak to the front desk and we were told that they would try to find us another hotel but it would cost us the difference. WHAT? I asked for a refund and I would find something on my own this was horrible... they proceeded to tell me that we made our reservations through AMEX and there was nothing they could do... After standing in line with al the other anger guests I called AMEX and told them about what was going on and they took care of everything. We ended up at the Westin across the street and the Hotel Monaco finally gave us a refund after AMEX told them they were canceling our reservations. I was just sad that they never made arrangements for the renovations and basically told us that we were out of luck and to deal with it. Its almost always a converted building getting a second life. One thing you expect in older buildings is thicker walls. I stayed at a Kimpton in DC that was a former government building and the walls were an inch thick. Not so in this hotel. Of course, my neighbor was on 'something' and ended up vandalizing her room and being arrested but it was very, very loud. Bathroom was very small compared to the room size. The vanity was mirrored so I was able to do a self uterine exam while sitting on the toilet. That was weird. The room was clean but quite small. We didn't spend much time in the room so this wasn't a big problem for us. The room was very quiet at night. The location was very central, very close to Union Square. We had the free continental breakfast every morning (I am not sure if this is usually free but we were given tokens when checking me in). The breakfast was always fine and we enjoyed a light breakfast every morning of a bowl of fruit together with a choice of a bagel, toast or croissant. The free wine hour was also great everyday (I think it was between 5 and 6pm) where free food was also provided - little nibbles like cheese etc. If I returned to San Francisco I don't think we would stay here again, but just because there seemed like there was a lot of good hotels around and we would like to try somewhere different.",Good hotel in great location

It seemed like ""renovation"" really just meant newer wallpaper and maybe a new marble top sink. Lots of wasted space. The floor tile was very outdated. The bathtub shower tile was also from a distant era and in need of some serious attention. The tub was one step up from the floor, and if we were elderly, we would not have been able to even get into the shower tub. The glass door frame was just gross. The smell of old cigarettes detracted from the fun decor and comfy bed. The room was large and offered a lot of space, but, again, the smell made it not very desirable to stay in the room. It was good that we could open the windows. The location of the hotel is great. Easy walking distance to great restaurants and shopping. The restaurant was under construction, so we went out for breakfast instead of having the one free pastry the hotel offered. The Living area was basic, but the rooms were very nice. The Bed was comfortable and had plenty of space for two of us. What impressed me the most was the staff. Extremely helpful, accommodating, and friendly. The maid service was commendable, Every Morning they would tell us ""Good Morning"" and ask if there was anything we needed. They even knew which room I was in, which was quite surprising. The hotel decor on the floors other than the lobby reminded me of the Strater hotel in Durango which I just love. The downside was they are currently renovating their Bar and restaurant so we had to go out for Breakfast. However the hotel did offer free pastries, muffins, fruit, coffee, and juices every morning, and had a wine hour every evening. There is a fantastic Breakfast place across the street, less than a block away, which we ate at everyday. Yes it was that good! And the Clift Hotel is right next door which has a very nice Bar. A little pricey, but okay because they make great drinks. With the exception of the noise from the street, it was fantastic. There is a lot of horn honking in Union Square so I would suggest bringing EAR PLUGS to any hotel in the area. I wouldn't go for a stroll down Taylor street to often, especially at night. Its a bit seedy. On the flip side, Your in the heart of the Shopping district and the Yerba Buena center. I had a fabulous time Skating at the Yerba ice rink (indoor) and is beautiful. We had fantastic food, shopping till you drop along with Front row seats at a Macy's Fashion show, listened to live jazz music at a restaurant on Powell, and had the pleasure of getting to be there during Fleet Week. The restaurant was closed for renovations, but the hotel staff is more than happy to order whatever you like and have it delivered directly to your room.
 The location is safe, clean and easy to access. I would recomend booking an airport shuttle for pickup on arrival and departure as taxi fares are steep. I'm not sure if i was treated differently because i was younger but it really seemed that way. While checking in with my 2 other guests we witnessed a couple in front of us while checking in get asked if they needed help with their bags and assistence to their room. During my check-in experience I was not asked any of those questions. Meanwhile i had a suit case in my hand that was bigger than me, nor was i asked if i needed assistance to my room. This is just very disappointing. I did not feel like i was staying in a 4 star hotel. I was just very upset that i watched others get treated better, and the only reason i can come up with is because they were older, so maybe they have more respect for older adults? This is the first bad review i've ever left a hotel,i hate to do this but the front desk should be providing each individual guest the same assistance. I just hate being treated bad especially on a vacation. Our college student daughter and friend were staying there and shortly after checking into their room and dashing off to a concert, my daughter called me in a panic to say that she lost her wallet, with all of her cash, her ID, and her ATM card. We called the hotel and, long story short, Lauren found her wallet and called right away to tell us, thereby saving the weekend and putting my daughters mind at rest to enjoy the rest of the concert. The rooms in this hotel are terrific. The first time I stayed there, I needed a suite and got a spacious room with pocket doors separating the chic living room from the luxurious bedroom (with a jacuzzi in the bathroom.) Location is quite central and don't miss the great coffee early in the morning (or go to the Starbucks just a block or two away), the wine hour, and you can get goldfish in your room just by asking. I come to SF a lot and often struggle w decent hotels at a decent rate- Hotel Monaco was pretty close to perfect. The location is excellent (a few blocks from Union Sq.) with great shopping and dinning at your doorstep. The lobby was lovely- you actually wanted to spend some time here. The staff was personable and demonstrated a true thankfulness for your business. The room was spacious (almost unheard of in SF)- had a large window with actual sightings of the sky (unlike many other SF hotels where you see another building 2' outside your window). Was traveling with my wife and 2 year old- as we checked out this morning the front desk staff gave my daughter a stuffed fish toy- they have just thought of everything (including coupons for free breakfast, happy hour in the lobby, fitness solutions, free wifi if you're a Kimpton member…). One thing to note is the restaurant is closed and under construction. Wasn't a problem for us as there are a lot of options near by- but be warned.

It's located at Geary and Taylor and you are from that point closer to the Tenderloin ( seedy area ) than I like to be. If I had to do it again, I would prob have chosen the Palomar for staying near that location. It's closer to the shopping areas and Financial district and more central to a better area overall. On a positive note, the room was good. Decor and furniture very comfortable and stylish. Bathroom small and not totally renovated, but it was nice. The staff is EXCELLENT. Always there to help and offer tips. There was no restaurant when we were there but they did offer coffee and pastry in the AM to make up for it. When I checked out with the manager, I expected to be asked how my stay was and was looking forward to providing my feedback... but they never asked. There were countless deficiencies: (1) Deceptive website and unresponsive, insensitive management. This is my biggest complaint. See details below. (2) Loud construction and no restaurant. Although they attempt to provide one piece of fruit and one dinky pastry to compensate, they do not even have plates or silverware available to eat with. We were told to go back to our room and call the front desk to request a knife to be delivered--what?!?! (3) Almost no counter space in the bathroom. A small toiletry bag will overhang the sink no matter where you put it and get wet. The only other alternative is on top of the toilet. I don't want wet or fecal toiletries, do you? (4) Dirty and disgusting window casements that may never have been cleaned (5) A desk so small, it is almost useless (especially after you use it to place your toiletries). (6) A noisy mini-fridge located in the nightstand right next to your head makes intermittent noise all day and night (surely they could have put this somewhere else in a suite) (7) Almost no useful drawer space (perhaps because what should have been drawer space was instead occupied by a mini-fridge!) (8) Cracked tile around the tub faucet (9) A hand shower that forces you against the wall of the shower because it is loose and does not stay in position (I don't particularly enjoy rubbing up against foreign hotel shower tiles, do you?). Later in our trip, we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and had much better experience at a lower class of hotel. Further on (1) above: We booked a Junior Suite to get a suite with a separate bedroom so we could put our toddler to bed early and have our own separate space. The website indicates that suites generally include, ""Five different suite types...Separate living room with queen-size sleeper sofa."" When we checked in at 8:30p with our tired, grumpy 2 year old, we were surprised to find that there was no separate living room at all. We were advised that while all other suite types do have a separate bedroom, the Junior Suites do not because when looking at their website you are expected to put your lawyer hat on to infer that ""a bedroom with king-size bed and a queen-size sleeper sofa"" means there is no door in the Junior Suite at all. What does ""separate"" mean? Separate from the bathroom?...the hallway? The room description must specifically indicate that it is ""Separated by a sliding door."" They suggested we could upgrade to a larger suite that would be available on the day we planned to check out—a useless solution. We were then advised we could leave and find another hotel which would have cost substantially more money if we did not accept being deceived. That would have entailed taking a mini-van full of kid supplies many blocks away when we had already pre-paid for parking only 1 block away. They offered only to waive our cancellation fee, another totally useless and token gesture. But we were assured the manager would be advised of our predicament the next morning. The manager never contacted us or even acknowledged our complaint. When we again reiterated our dissatisfaction upon checkout, we were told we should have called to verify the structure of the room upon booking. Who does that? I knew I had hit the mark when our girls gasped with excitement when we walked in the room and the large high definition TV had a surreal scene of an aquarium playing. The decour is unique and tastefully done on each property. Some may say a little over the top, but I love it! I feared all the colors shown for the Monaco property would be too much but they put the excitement on the wall behind the headboard for that initial walk in pow and the walls you stare out while at rest are more toned down, yet tastefully matched. The bathroom was an interesting respite of black and white. Our most fun was realizing we could order our own pet fish as company during our stay. Another thing my girls and I loved. The wine happy hour seems to be standard at all the hotels as well as superb customer service. Although this is a pricey hotel, I've always felt the staff was highly welcoming even when we were looking a bit forlorn and tattered. Valet is crazy expensive it seems at all the properties, so this time we opted to drop off our rental and learn the public transit system, very graciously offered by front desk staff. SF has a great subway system in which we were able to go over to Berkley and then to the airport upon leaving. I would stay here again but since SF has so many Kimptons, if I went back I'd love to explore a new Kimpton as well as a new part of SF.",Love the Goldfish

Nice spa, too. Location a few blocks from Union Square was very convenient - easy walk to BART, only about 20 minutes to the Ferry Building. I find the big San Francisco hotels too anonymous and tour-group or convention oriented and the smaller boutique hotels don't have such great facilities. Renovations were underway to open up the ballroom (we got complementary breakfast for the inconvenience) and the spa closed a couple days into my stay (but it was quite nice with a Jacuzzi, dry sauna and steam room). YMMV with the massage (I probably wouldn't repeat it - but there was a raid the spa certificate so nothing ventured, nothing lost). There's a lot of traffic noise (yay SF firetrucks - light sleepers should be advised. The business centre is on the pricey side, with payments required both for light printing and any computer time used. The part I'm truly gushing about though is the personalized service. Two front desk staff / managers started welcoming me back to the hotel by name starting the second day of my stay. Johnathan also gave great advice for day activities, and his local expertise really shone through. We read some of the negative reviews and were concerned, but found them to be completely inaccurate (at least our experience). There was some noise in the room, but nothing that in anyway took away from the experience. San Francisco is a big city - there will be noise. And yes there are a lot of homeless people, but again it's a city. I never felt unsafe walking in the immediate area surrounding the hotel. We did venture about 5 blocks west (I think) into the Tenderloin looking for a dive bar I had read about online, and it is a bit gritty, but the area around the hotel is fine. We knew about the restaurant being closed in advance and did not find this to be an issue at all. There are probably a dozen hotels and restaurants in a 2 block radius. The Warwick with a very nice bar is literally across the street. In about 2 minutes you are in Union Square. Also appreciated the pastries and coffee in the mornings. Both mornings the selection was slightly different and fresh. I'm not sure I have ever stayed in such a conveniently located hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again if we are ever in San Francisco again!!",Wonderful Experience

We had a double room on the 8th floor overlooking the Hilton. It was clean fresh and quirky perfect for us. The hotel is situated on the fringe of the tenderloin one of the less desirable neighbourhoods in San Francisco. But if you read anything about it being a ""dodgy location"" ignore them there being silly, San Francisco is a wonderful place but you must keep your wits about you like any city. When we went out to explore I spoke with a chap on the front desk who advised me with a map of areas to avoid he was very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The hotel is a few blocks from Union square and a 5 minute walk from the Powell street BART station. There you can also cross the road to the large Westfield shopping centre. When it came to breakfast we assumed we would have to go out each morning but to our surprise the hotel gave us 4 vouchers each to use in there lounge each morning. Free coffee, free iced coffee and tea. 100% freshly squeezed fruit juices, a fantastic selection of muffins and fresh pastries and as selection of fruit. Daily local a nationwide newspapers and plenty of places to sit.
 Can you ask anymore??? No it was a perfect touch of class from a lovely hotel who have only closed the restaurant to improve it, I have read reviews on here of people moaning about the noise and the free breakfast as a substitute not being good enough it's rubbish yeh there was noise but why are you sat in your hotel room anyway? Go out and explore this extraordinary city.
 We went on to LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Vegas and New York after we stayed here and struggles to find the same hospitality offered here.

 We arrived early at the hotel and they were all very nice and professional. They offered to keep our luggage stored till the room was ready, and we left to explore SanFran.
 Our room was clean, spacious and very comfortable with free wifi. The decor is different and fun, outside the traditional hotel setup. The only drawback was that the hotel is undergoing some construction and even on Saturday the pounding noise was in full force. Luckily, by 5pm sharp the noise was gone.
 Things seem to have been nicely arranged at this property. The toiletries are nice and they go beyond with the list of toiletries with which they can provide guests who forgot to bring their own. Very thoughtful!
 The staff is friendly, attentive and resourceful. Austin at the front desk was very kind and helpful.
 The hotel hosts a wine happy hour near the lobby, and in the morning they also offer yummy pastries, coffee, juice and tea. They also have bikes that guests can borrow and go to explore town.

All in all, it was a very pleasant stay but as with the NYC Kimpton hotel on Park Ave in my other review, this hotel is undergoing renovations during the week days. The breakfast pastries were very tasty and fresh. The hotel elevators were remodeled but still looked old, although quite efficient. I had booked my 3 night stay about 3 months ago on Hotels.com which did not give me any points toward my Kimpton Rewards (very disappointing since the hotel website fees per room was more expensive). Also, I was given an ADA room. When I asked ""why"" they said that it was the only room available for the length of stay I requested. I also requested a higher floor but was put on the 4th floor overlooking Geary street which was noisy even during the night. The front receptionist said that the higher floors were already rented out. If that was the case, they should double/triple insulate the windows on the lower floors to filter out the street sounds. The bed and room and bath was very comfortable and large since it was an ADA room. However, I cannot figure out why they gave me that room instead of an ordinary room. I did peak inside a standard room and it appeared much smaller than the one I received so I guess I was lucky to be considered ADA qualified. This hotel is 2 blocks from Union Square which is wonderful since one cannot hear the cable car and the square noise from this location. I did hear sirens during the night and also could hear the street traffic from my room. This property is an easy walk from the Powell St BART station and even I made the trek with my roller bag and carryon, considering I'm over 65 and was traveling alone and am really out of shape. All in all, I did like this old but not boutique hotel. It is clean, the linens are clean and in good shape, and the staff is very accommodating. Oh, yes, this hotel is pet friendly too although I did not see any four-legged critters while I was there. I would still definitely stay at this hotel again despite the negatives in this review. There is also a large homeless population roaming across the street; I was told the ""Tenderloin"" district is 2 blocks away and the homeless come to the touristy area to beg. Across the street was a small market, a liquor store and a Walgreens which was very convenient. I prefer to have a coffee machine in my room for first thing in the AM which they did not supply, however there was a free continental breakfast in the lobby (which we did not take advantage of). I guess you could say that about a lot of San Francisco buildings, especially hotels. The Hotel Monaco is no exception with its warm entry salon and renovated rooms which reflect the Barbary Coast era where anything went in this town. Sort of like now, come to think of it. Anyway, we booked a junior suite, and so were expecting 2 separate rooms. What it is, however, is a standard room with a slightly enlarged sitting area with a sofa bed. Okay, so far, but not ideal. What they don't tell you is that these rooms are adjacent to the elevators. I'll admit it was quieter than I expected, but elevator noise was still noticeable. Better upgrade to the deluxe suite, where there's a divider. Other issues not specific to this hotel is the increase in room rates. We booked this a little over a year in advance.  I would recommend NOT staying at this hotel if you plan on being in the hotel in any capacity between the hours of 8-5 M-F as you won't be able to hear yourself think let alone converse or even attempt to rest.
 According to the front desk there is nothing they can do and ""because it was posted on their website"" I should have known about it and not stayed here if a jackhammer was undesirable.

The staff are friendly & helpful, no issue storing bags for the last day & gave us a space for a bit of last minute re-packing after we had already checked out. The duvet was just placed between two flat sheets and therefore moved in the night for the duvet to then touch her skin, which she thought was very unhygienic! As mentioned above due to there not being a restaurant we were given complimentary breakfast tokens , which allowed each person to a pastry and a coffee, disappointing. As we arrived very late in the evening and due to the area being some what concerning, we were recommended to order a take away. The concierge were helpful in making the call for us. On our last night we wished to eat out and couldn't get hold of concierge to make the booking for us, we dialled from our hotel room phone. On check out we were charged 8 dollars ( not that this is a big amount) for concierge calling the take away, then booking a reservation at one restaurant and for the 1 minute call we made on our last night. We were disgusted by this as the hotel provided no food or beverages and we had no other choice but to eat and drink out. Overall this hotel is poor, the staff are helpful and friendly enough but this does not make up for the poor amenities and high prices.
